To celebrate the date and the company’s 97th anniversary, 7-Eleven stores will again hold Free Slurpee Day, giving out small Slurpees from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. today (or until the machines run dry).

A limited-edition flavor, Mountain Dew Freedom Fusion, has joined the popular regular flavors this year, the company said.

Members of the 7-Eleven rewards club will get a second free Slurpee, with the online voucher redeemable anytime in July.

While you’re sipping, here are some fun facts from the 7-Eleven website:

— If you’re a kid at heart with a long memory, you’ll recall that the ICEE predated the Slurpee. According to Wikipedia, 7-Eleven purchased the ICEE technology invented by Omar Knedlik in Kansas.

— The 7-Eleven company was founded in 1927 by “Uncle Johnny” Jefferson Green, who started selling goods folks might need every day from the dock of an ice house in Dallas.

— The name 7-Eleven was adopted in 1946 to reflect the chain’s hours of 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Nowadays, most are open 24/7.
