LATEST NEWS

July 31: LHP Martín Pérez, LHP , RHP added to active roster; RHP Stephen Kolek placed on 15-day IL (right-elbow tendinitis); RHP Logan Gillaspie optioned to Triple-A El Paso; LHP Austin Davis designated for assignment
As expected, the Padres' pitching staff got a major shakeup with the arrivals of three arms acquired at the Trade Deadline. To clear roster space, Gillaspie was optioned and Davis was DFA'd. The team offered no update on the status of Kolek, who pitched an inning on Tuesday night.

Manager Mike Shildt noted that Pérez likely will start at some point during the team's weekend series against the Rockies. He added that both Scott and Hoeing would be available in relief immediately. Shildt hadn't yet spoken to that duo about the specifics of their roles. But he mentioned Tuesday that Robert Suarez would remain as the team's closer -- the role Scott filled in Miami. Scott seemed fine with that.

"Whenever the phone rings, I'm ready," Scott said. "Whatever role it is. ... I'm not thinking about [saves]. I'd rather win a World Series."

10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST

RHP (right elbow tendinitis)
Expected return: TBD
Kolek pitched an inning on July 30. A day later, he landed on the IL. The team offered no specifics on the injury and offered no timetable for a return. Kolek, a Rule 5 Draft selection, has a 5.21 ERA in 42 appearances this season. (Last updated: July 31)

OF (right femoral stress reaction)
Expected return:
August or September
Tatis underwent an MRI exam over the All-Star break, which revealed enough healing that he was cleared for light baseball activity -- including swinging and running. The Padres have not offered a timetable for Tatis' return, though Padres general manager A.J. Preller had this to say in his post-Trade Deadline press conference: "We expect him to be back. Exactly when? That's something we've still got to get more information from our doctors. But every report I've gotten has been really positive." (Last updated: July 30)

LHP (left adductor strain)
Expected return: August
Peralta sustained the injury while delivering a pitch in the Padres' game against the Mariners on July 9. He winced in pain and promptly exited the game alongside an athletic trainer. Three days later, he was placed on the IL. Manager Mike Shildt offered no timetable for Peralta's return, noting only that, "It's going to require some time away to heal and some rest." Peralta has posted a 4.50 ERA across 41 outings in the first half. (Last updated: July 12)

60-DAY INJURED LIST

RHP (right elbow inflammation)
Expected return: August
Musgrove pitched two innings in a simulated game at the Padres' spring complex in Peoria, Ariz., on July 30. He threw approximately 40 pitches against Mariners Minor Leaguers in a controlled setting. Manager Mike Shildt noted that Musgrove's next step would be a formal rehab assignment, expected to begin Aug. 4 at one of the team's Minor League affiliates. This is Musgrove's second stint on the IL this season with the same issue, but he believes the extra rest this time has allowed the injury to heal. He received a PRP injection in addition to a prior cortisone shot. (Last updated: July 31)

RHP (right elbow inflammation)
Expected return: 2025
Patiño underwent Tommy John surgery on April 30, putting an end to his 2024 season before it began. The 24-year-old made two appearances in Spring Training before opening the season on the IL. The Padres, who originally signed Patiño as an amateur free agent before dealing him to Tampa Bay in the 2020 Blake Snell trade, claimed Patiño off waivers from the White Sox in December.
