July 30: RHP leaves start against Cardinals with arm fatigue
Scherzer said his arm fatigued again for the second time in three starts. The 40-year-old allowed three runs in four innings, but was removed from the game after 68 pitches. He said he felt better than the Orioles start on July 20, when he first had arm fatigue and gave up four runs in two innings, but clearly not as good as his White Sox start on July 25, when he tossed six innings of one-run ball.

That said, he’s not concerned. He doesn’t believe this is an injury and he won’t need to go on the IL any time soon.

“The good news is I didn't have any zings,” Scherzer said. “That's No. 1. I didn't hurt myself and I didn’t strain anything. So I have a pretty good feel for when my arm is right and when it’s wrong. The fact that I didn't really hurt myself is a good sign, but it's still frustrating that I wasn't able to complete the start.”

July 30: LHP acquired from Detroit for Minor League right-handed pitchers and ; designated for assignment
In a move to bolster the bullpen and add an experienced left-hander, the Rangers acquired Chafin shortly before the Deadline. In 37 innings this season, Chafin has posted a 3.16 ERA across 41 relief appearances. He has struck out 50 while walking 16.

Hernández posted a 5.05 ERA with 36 strikeouts and 26 walks in 26 appearances for the Rangers this season.

July 29: Minor League LHP acquired from Royals for RHP
The left-hander, who did not open the season on the Royals’ Top 30 prospects list per MLB Pipeline, made his MLB debut on July 5 against the Rockies, tossing two-thirds of an inning without allowing a hit or a run. It was his only glimpse of big league action this year, as he’s spent most of the season with Triple-A Omaha, where he’s posted a 2.26 ERA in 59 2/3 innings across 37 games (two starts). He’s averaged 11.9 strikeouts per nine innings.

Pennington, who is currently on option at Omaha, will be assigned to Triple-A Round Rock. More>>

July 28: C acquired in trade with Detroit for a pair of Minor Leaguers
Texas made its first trade of this year’s Deadline on Sunday night, when it acquired catcher Carson Kelly from the Tigers for Minor League catcher Liam Hicks and right-hander Tyler Owens. Kelly has hit .240 with a .716 OPS this season, and could be an upgrade to the Rangers’ lineup whenever necessary. With Andrew Knizner optioned to Triple-A Round Rock, Kelly will be used as a backup to Jonah Heim.

10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST

RHP (right groin strain)
Expected return: TBD
Gray exited his start in Toronto on July 28 before throwing a pitch. He initially tweaked his groin during his pregame bullpen, but decided to pitch through it until the pain worsened. The right-hander took the hill for warmups, but quickly called over the club’s trainer. Bruce Bochy removed him shortly thereafter. Gray was placed on the IL amid a flurry of roster moves on July 29, and Bochy said on Monday in St. Louis that he expects Gray to miss about a month as he recovers. (Last updated: July 29)

60-DAY INJURED LIST

RHP (right UCL repair surgery)
Expected return: Mid-September
Jacob deGrom threw another bullpen on July 30 in St. Louis. It was 45 pitches, in three sets of 15, mixing in all his pitches. He said he felt good afterward.

“The goal is to pitch this year,” deGrom said. “The goal is to get back out there and help this team and hopefully help us get to the playoffs.”

General manager Chris Young pointed out that timelines are fluid regarding injuries, but he also said deGrom is progressing well in rehab with an eye on returning in August.

deGrom was officially transferred to the 60-day injured list on March 22. (Last updated: July 30)

OF (lower back soreness)
Expected return: TBD
Carter, who was transferred to the 60-day IL on July 29, visited a back specialist in California for a second opinion on his lower back over the weekend. General manager Chris Young said via Zoom on July 30 that he's not optimistic about Carter's return this season.

“Evan’s back continues to give him a little bit of trouble when he ramps up his hitting progression,” Young said. “We've seen multiple specialists in the past week and determined that Evan is going to need a more lengthy time period to rest his back without rotational activity. It’s just going to take some more time and we want to protect him. He's a huge part of our future.”

Carter missed seven games from May 11-17 with back soreness, but he initially returned without an IL stint. The Rangers then placed Carter on the injured list on May 28. While a return looked possible when he rejoined the club around the All-Star break and ramped up activities, Carter hasn’t felt healthy enough for a rehab stint, which prompted the shutdown.

Carter missed time in the Minors with a stress fracture in his back in 2021, so the Rangers have been cautious with him. (Last updated: July 30)

RHP (right UCL repair surgery)
Expected return: Late August
Mahle pitched four innings with Double-A Frisco on June 25, allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said the right-handed Mahle felt good after that outing, and he is scheduled to start July 31 for Triple-A Round Rock as he inches closer to a Major League return.

Mahle underwent Tommy John surgery when he was with the Twins in May 2023, and the Rangers signed him to a two-year, $22 million deal this offseason. The injury ruined a promising 2023 season with Minnesota, as Mahle posted a 3.16 ERA with 28 strikeouts over five starts. Mahle was officially moved to the 60-day IL at the start of the regular season. (Last updated: July 26)

RHP (right shoulder sprain)
Expected return: TBD
The Rangers announced on June 23 that Winn would go to the Major League 15-day IL with right shoulder discomfort, retroactive to June 18. Winn was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on June 18, but informed the club that he was experiencing shoulder discomfort after he rejoined the Express. Team doctors then determined that he had a right shoulder sprain, and he was moved to the 60-day IL on June 26.

His last outing before the injury was with the big league club, so his option is now voided. (Last updated: June 26)

RHP (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: TBD
Coleman was selected by the Rangers in the 2023 Rule 5 Draft from the Yankees. He did not pitch in 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. In 2022, Coleman was named the Eastern League “Reliever of the Year” after going 2-3 with 15 saves and a 2.86 ERA across 35 relief appearances for Double-A Somerset. (Last updated: March 9)
