North Carolina cities and towns are the economic engines of our state. When they thrive, the whole state thrives.

Cities and towns in North Carolina are under tremendous strain as they serve the growing population moving to the state, face financial challenges from the loss of industry and population in rural areas, and cope with workforce shortages affecting all cities.

The NCLM Local Leadership Foundation supports local leaders as they face these issues, providing: Education & Training, Workforce Development, Technical Assistance, Research, and Innovation & Collaboration Support.

North Carolina Hometowns Need Help

Time and again, the League hears from member cities and towns that these services are making an immediate impact and helping towns better meet the needs of their citizens.

Since 2022, the League has provided a robust array of much needed services and assistance to cities and towns across North Carolina. These efforts include increasing education and training opportunities focused on local government financial management and operations, upgrading municipal accounting systems to boost financial reporting capabilities, and one-on-one accounting mentorship in small, rural towns. This dedicated support to cities and towns are vital to the ongoing health of North Carolina’s rural communities.

Aiming for Financial Health in Small-Town Government

Through the League's Municipal Accounting Services, small-town governments are joining the Accounting Instruction & Mentorship (AIM) program. The goal of this program is to improve the financial health of towns that have not historically had the resources and support available that is needed to thrive.
