‘The Old Guard 2’ Guide: Everything You Need to Know - Netflix Tudum
- Aimee Spinks/NetflixAndy and her crew of immortal mercenaries are back.June 17, 2022
The Old Guard lives forever, so it’s no surprise that we’re getting a sequel. The story of Andromache of Scythia, aka Andy (Charlize Theron), and her team of immortal mercenaries stormed up the Netflix charts in the summer of 2020, and now production is underway on a follow-up that will reunite the undying crew on an all-new mission. Below, we’ve broken down everything you need to know before you see The Old Guard return to Netflix.
What is The Old Guard 2’s release date?
A release date hasn’t been announced yet, but cameras just started rolling on the sequel earlier this week.
Is the original Old Guard cast returning for The Old Guard 2?
Nearly the entire cast of the original Old Guard are reprising their roles in the sequel. That means Theron is back as Andy, KiKi Layne will once again play Nile, and star-crossed lovers Joe and Nicky (Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli, respectively) will live to fight another day. Also returning? Matthias Schoenaerts as the, shall we say, loyalty-challenged Booker and Chiwetel Ejiofor as the team’s handler Copley. This time around, Veronica Ngô will have a larger role as Andy’s ex-teammate Quynh, who’s spent the last 500 years buried in an underwater cage and repeatedly drowning. She should be in a good mood!
Are there any new cast members in The Old Guard 2?
Yes! Uma Thurman and Henry Golding have joined the cast. We’ll have to wait and see whether they’ll be friends or foes.
What is The Old Guard 2 about?
A logline for the new film hasn’t been released yet, but the first Old Guard ended on an unresolved note. After Booker betrayed the group, he was exiled for a century — only to find the long-lost Quynh lurking in his apartment. What does she want?
In Greg Rucka’s Old Guard graphic novels, Noriko, the character on which Quynh is based, becomes a criminal kingpin. She goes on to seek out Booker and tracks down Andy, bitter at being abandoned. Whether or not Quynh follows a similar trajectory remains to be seen, but we do know that Theron, who’s a producer on the movie, is eager to unpack that connection a bit more.
“There’s obviously a relationship there that we didn’t really explore in this film,” Theron told Seth Meyers in 2020. “So I’m excited if we get the chance to make another one, to explore that, because then we’re just adding another female into the mix, which I think will make it really interesting.” With Andy’s immortality apparently running out, it could be a difficult reunion.
Who’s writing and directing The Old Guard 2?
Victoria Mahoney is picking up the directorial battle-ax from Gina Prince-Bythewood, who helmed the first movie and is producing the sequel. Prior to this, Mahoney directed episodes of Lovecraft Country and Queen Sugar, and became the first Black woman to direct a Star Wars project when she served as a second-unit director on 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. The new film is once again written by Rucka, who wrote the installment as well as the comics on which the movies are based.
