Fall in Love with the Cast of ‘Your Place or Mine’

Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher head up a swoon-worthy rom-com ensemble.
    Feb. 8, 2023

After 20 years of friendship, Your Place or Mine’s Peter (Ashton Kutcher) and Debbie (Reese Witherspoon) know everything about each other. Or at least they thought they did. But when the two trade homes — and coasts — for a week, they quickly realize that perhaps they haven’t been as honest with each other as they thought. Peter arrives in Los Angeles to find that single mom Debbie is a tad too overprotective of her son, Jack (Wesley Kimmel) and has been strangely silent about Zen (Steve Zahn), her neighbor and gardener. Meanwhile, Debbie finds out about a nerdy little secret hidden in the oven of her BFF’s Brooklyn penthouse — not to mention an ex-girlfriend (Zoë Chao) living nearby.

“I definitely have a lot of friends that I talk to primarily via text, phone calls, FaceTimes, that sort of thing,” writer-director Aline Brosh McKenna tells Tudum. “So I was really interested in the idea of: ‘Can you ever really know someone at a distance?’ ”

Debbie

Practical single mom Debbie is always thinking about the outcome. Is it safe? Is it healthy? Does it make sense in the long run? As a result, she and her son, Jack, live a Los Angeles life governed by rules and routine. But all that goes out the window when Debbie travels to New York for work, leaving her home — and, more importantly, her child — in best friend Peter’s hands. At last, Debbie has a brief chance to live just for herself. Will she take it?

Reese and Ashton Rate Pickup Lines for Your Place or MineThe two practice sliding into DMs with fan-submitted pickup lines.

No one gives Type-A representation quite like Witherspoon. From performances like Election’s Tracy Flick and Big Little Lies’ Madeline Martha Mackenzie to her rise as a producing mogul at the helm of Hello Sunshine, she’s changed the way we think about powerful women on-screen and off. Ambition and lists are in!

On set, Witherspoon’s professionalism is an inspiration. “Reese brings a warmth and a humor and an intelligence to anything she does,” Brosh McKenna says about working with Witherspoon. “Up close and on set, she is even more spectacular than you think she might be.”

Ashton Kutcher

Peter

New York-based Peter craves novelty. Unsentimental and unattached, the only constant in his life is his decades-long friendship with Debbie and a resolute love for the New Wave sounds of the Cars. But Peter’s outward cool-guy demeanor betrays a deeper vulnerability: This aspiring writer lacks the confidence to really pursue his passion. Could a week in LA caring for Jack change all of that?

Ashton Kutcher Explains Why Moms Think He's Hot The Your Place or Mine star lays it all on the table.

Kutcher has been waiting a long time to collaborate with Witherspoon. “Through the years, with every romantic comedy that I thought about doing, I would always ask if Reese was available,” he tells Netflix. “I’ve wanted to work with her my entire career.”

Speaking of that career: Need proof that time is a flat circle? This year, Kutcher is stepping back into Michael Kelso’s shoes for a guest role in That ’90s Show and leading a rom-com. No, you’re not being Punk’d — the early aughts are back, baby!

Jack

Debbie’s son, Jack, has grown up with maybe too much structure. For too long, his mom’s overprotective streak has prevented him from trying new things and putting himself out there. Enter Peter, who sees Jack struggling to break out of his shell, and gives him the push he needs to crack it open.

Comedy is in Kimmel’s blood: As a toddler, he made his on-screen debut in “The Baby Bachelor,” a spoof sketch on uncle Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live. You may also recognize him from roles in Good GirlsWandaVision and The Book of Boba Fett — just look out for a mini Tusken Raider!

Tig Notaro

Alicia

With Peter living in New York, the role of Debbie’s LA best friend falls to Alicia, a fellow parent at Jack’s school whose wry wit and love of coffee keep things grounded.

Best known for her deadpan delivery honed over years as a stand-up comedian, Notaro has appeared in a number of films and TV shows, including Zack Snyder’s Army of the DeadTransparentTogether Together and One Mississippi, a semi-autobiographical series she co-created with Diablo Cody.

Steve Zahn

Zen

A zany retired tech entrepreneur with a green thumb, Zen is Debbie’s neighbor and gardener in Your Place or Mine. Zen landscapes for free in the hopes that she’ll finally look his way.

Zahn is the kind of actor that you’re always excited to see pop up on screen, no matter how small the role. From his breakout role in 1994’s Reality Bites to his recent turn as anxious dad Mark Mossbacher in the first season of The White Lotus, he’s spent his career delivering a wide range of unexpected and delightful performances. Never change, Steve.

Zoë Chao

Minka

Chao plays Minka, one of Peter’s ex-girlfriends who befriends Debbie after she arrives in New York. A millennial with a wild streak, she pushes Debbie out of her comfort zone and into the arms of handsome book editor, Theo (Jesse Williams).

Best known for her breakout role as Isobel in the comedy-drama series Strangers, Chao has since appeared in shows like Love LifeModern Love and The Afterparty. You can also spot her as Rebel Wilson’s nemesis in Senior Year

Jesse Williams

Theo

Hot and well-read? Williams’ character checks off all the boxes. A smart book editor at Debbie’s favorite New York publishing imprint, Theo might very well be the kind of Prince Charming who makes her take that spontaneous leap toward a fairy-tale ending.

You probably know Williams as Dr. Jackson Avery in Grey’s Anatomy, which he starred in for 12 seasons.
