UPDATE: Snow forecast rises again, with 4 to 6 inches now predicted for wide area in latest storm

The snowfall forecast for New Jersey has increased slightly to widespread amounts of 2 to 4 inches of snow across the state from a winter storm now expected to start Monday evening and last overnight, creating a messy Tuesday morning commute as a change to a wintery mix is possible.

It could be the first of two snowstorms this week, with forecasters tracking the potential for more significant snow on Thursday night into Friday, though details for that system remain uncertain. Snow squalls swept across the state on Sunday as a blast of colder air arrived.

The National Weather Service has issued winter weather advisories beginning Monday night for every county across the state.

“A widespread 2-4 inches is expected across the region,” the weather service said in its Monday forecast update “The I-95 corridor and areas northwest of it will likely see between 2-4 inches of snow while areas southeast of the corridor see closer to 1-3 inches.”

Up to 5 inches is possible in some spots in northwestern New Jersey.

AccuWeather’s forecast calls for 1 to 3 inches of snow across much of the state with little to no accumulation along the southern Jersey Shore.

The storm system is now expected to arrive earlier and end shortly after noon on Tuesday.

The winter weather advisory covering most of the state starts at 7 p.m. with start times of 8 and 10 p.m. in northeastern counties of Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union counties.

Accuweather’s snow arrival forecast calls for the chance of precipitation as early as this afternoon.

As the storm winds down Tuesday, snow could mix with warm air aloft and change to a wintry mix that could make driving conditions deteriorate quickly.

“This is a bit concerning and will be watched carefully going forward,” the weather service said. “This situation means that snow may change over to a period of sleet/freezing rain or wintry mix early Tuesday morning before the event concludes. Guidance suggests the I-95 corridor and areas southeast of the corridor will have the best chance of seeing this occur.”

Clouds will decrease through Tuesday and Wednesday will bring mainly clear skies, but high temperatures will remain in the 20s.

The colder temperatures could set the stage for another coastal winter storm starting on Thursday night and lasting into Friday. The track of the storm either along the coast or more offshore remains unclear.

High temperatures on Friday will be in the upper 20s and low 30s.

“While this still has the potential to bring the area a more significant snowfall event, there is a lot of uncertainty in the forecast at this time,” the weather service said.
