Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk said he will consider his club and international future following the Netherlands’ Euro 2024 semi-final defeat by England.

Van Dijk, 33, saw his side concede a last-minute goal against England in Dortmund on Wednesday night as Netherlands lost 2-1.

The centre-back is captain of his club and country but only has one year left on his contract at Liverpool.

Asked about his future following the England loss, Van Dijk, via the Reuters news agency, said he “hasn’t the slightest idea right now”.

“I will think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international player,” he added. “Then we’ll go for it again, but first recover from this.

“After a season like this, where all kinds of things have happened, it gets emotional at the end because you know it’s over.”

Van Dijk was near ever-present for Liverpool during the 2023-24 Premier League season, featuring in all of their league games save for two he was suspended for. In May, he said there was “no news” on his contract situation at the Merseyside club, who have since appointed compatriot Arne Slot as their new head coach.

Van Dijk also started all six of Netherlands’ matches at Euro 2024, taking his international appearance tally to 74.
