This week, Besiktas appointed former Netherlands international Giovanni van Bronckhorst as their new head coach.

Bundesliga outfit Mainz have contacted Liverpool over a possible permanent deal for defender Sepp van den Berg — but the clubs’ valuations remain far apart.

The Athletic revealed last week that Liverpool want around £20million ($25.5m) for the Dutch centre-back, who enjoyed an excellent season on loan at the German club. Mainz are desperate to keep the 22-year-old but that price tag is well out of their range.

Liverpool have fielded interest in Van den Berg from a number of top-flight clubs across Europe and are in no rush to make a decision on his future.

If they don't receive an acceptable offer then he will stay put and link up with Arne Slot's squad for the start of pre-season training next month.

Van den Berg joined Liverpool in a £4.4million move from Eredivisie club PEC Zwolle in 2019. He made four senior appearances for them under Jurgen Klopp’s reign as he spent time away on loan at Preston North End, Schalke and Mainz.

Jamie Vardy has signed a new one-year contract with Leicester City.

Vardy, 37, scored 20 goals in 37 appearances for Leicester last season, with his 18 Championship strikes coming across 18 starts and 17 substitute appearances.

"To get the numbers that I did (last season), I’m delighted with it, but there’s still more to come," Vardy said. "I look after myself. I’ve always said that age is just a number. My legs feel fine so that’s why I carry on until my legs say ‘that’s it, game over’. There will be a day when that comes, but that’s not right now.

“We look forward to another season in the Premier League and seeing what we can do. One hundred per cent, it’s the best league in the world. That’s where you want to be playing your football.”

Sesko: Why Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd, Newcastle and more want striker

Benjamin Sesko was considered among Europe’s top prospects before he had barely become a teenager.

Born in the small Slovenian town of Radece, an hour’s drive east from the capital Ljubljana, Sesko, now 21, was expected to follow in the footsteps of his father, Ales, and become a goalkeeper.

However, his towering 6ft 5in (195cm) frame and insatiable hunger for goals quickly steered him towards a different path that would later see him lead the line for his country and RB Leipzig.

Partick Thistle forward Ceiran Loney is set to join Everton.

A deal for the 16-year-old, who is the the Scottish side's youngest-ever player, is close to being confirmed by the Goodison Park club.

Loney caught the eye of Everton scouts and impressed on trial, having also spent time training with Brighton and other English clubs.

He has risen through Partick Thistle's academy ranks and made his senior debut for them last month, in a 4-1 Scottish Championship defeat to Dundee United.

Everton are seeking new academy recruits ahead of the upcoming season. The Athletic reported last November that Northern Ireland Under-18 striker Braiden Graham will also join the club this summer.

Everton staved off interest from multiple clubs to secure the 16-year-old's signature. Like Loney, he will join to initially be part of the academy set-up.

Alexander Isak insists he has “no thoughts on leaving” Newcastle United and says he “loves everything about the club”.

The 24-year-old Sweden international striker netted 25 goals for Eddie Howe’s side last season — 21 of which came in the Premier League.

Isak has been strongly linked with Arsenal — who are said to have tracked his development long-term — while his goal scoring record, age and all-round ability make him one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe.

However, the former Borussia Dortmund and Real Sociedad striker has insisted he has not considered leaving St James’ Park this summer.

But this is a complex situation with several factors at play and a number of outcomes are still possible.
