Emerging economies will continue driving agricultural markets over the coming decade
The value of global agricultural production is projected to increase by 1.1% annually. Emerging economies have increasingly driven global agricultural market developments over the last 20 years and are projected to continue to do so over the next decade, but with regional shifts linked to changing demographics and new economic affluence.
China is projected to have a lower share in both crop and livestock production, but to increase its production share in fisheries. Conversely, India is expected to have a greater share in both livestock and crop production. Sub-Saharan Africa and the Near East and North Africa regions are anticipated to achieve significant production growth, albeit from a low base.
In other regions, production growth is expected to be more moderate. Europe and Central Asia will grow the slowest. Limited growth is also anticipated in North America and Latin America and the Caribbean.
Despite these expected productivity improvements, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, significant productivity gaps are projected to persist, challenging farm incomes and food security and increasing countries’ dependence on food imports.

Effective governance is essential to ensure AI development and deployment are safe, secure and trustworthy, with policies and regulation that foster innovation and competition.Learn more

A strong trend has emerged towards the international dispersion of value chain activities such as design, production, marketing, distribution, etc. This emergence of GVCs and increased interest in their sustainability and resilience requires analysing supply chains as a whole and developing policies around them.Learn more
