Our Funders

FRONTLINE was founded in 1983. It is produced by the WGBH Educational Foundation and based in Boston, Mass. WGBH is a public media organization, which first aired on television in 1955. It serves as the largest producer of PBS content for TV and the web.

WGBH and its programs, including FRONTLINE, are supported by a broad mix of funding sources, including more than 150,000 individuals, along with foundations, corporations and the federal government. This prevents our reliance on any particular funding source and contributes to assuring our independence.

Congress provides an annual appropriation to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and that funding is distributed through a formula to all public TV and radio stations in what is called a Community Service Grant (CSG). The amount that WGBH receives in CSG funds accounts for about 9% of our local operating budget, and is used to support our local station operations. Current funders for FRONTLINE documentaries are listed below.
