1. How to Fix a Stuck Zipper

One of the most common zipper problems is a stuck zipper. No matter how hard you pull, your zipper just won’t budge. Fortunately, this problem can usually be fixed with common household items.

Rub Dish Soap or Other Lubricants on the Zipper

When your zipper feels stuck, applying some sort of lubricant like laundry soap could do the trick. There may be built-up dirt and debris that is causing the problem. Simply dilute the soap with a little bit of water. Then, rub the mixture around the area where the zipper is stuck, making sure to wiggle it to loosen it up.

If this doesn’t work, consider washing the entire backpack to see if that gets the job done.

Use a Graphite Pencil

If using laundry soap doesn’t help, one of the tried and true methods of fixing a zipper that is stuck is using a pencil. This method is convenient considering that you probably have a pencil already in your backpack! Similar to the laundry soap method, rub the lead tip of the pencil up and down the zipper and around the area where it is stuck. Once you’ve done that, try moving the zipper and see if it zips normally again.

2. How to Fix Zipper Teeth

If your zipper is still stuck, there’s a good chance that the problem is actually the teeth. Over time, the teeth of the zipper can bend, which can cause the zipper to become stuck or can prevent the teeth from closing altogether. In this case, applying lubrication won't help. First, you will want to check the area by making sure there isn’t any fabric getting in the way. If excess fabric isn’t the issue, it’s time to repair the teeth.

Use Pliers to Repair Bent Teeth

Pliers are usually the best option when it comes to fixing bent teeth, as they provide enough grip and strength to get the job done. Grab the bent teeth with the pliers and manipulate them until they are back in their original position. Make sure you are gentle when using the pliers, as too much force can pull the teeth out completely.

3. How to Fix a Broken Slider

Another common issue that you may face with a backpack zipper is the slider. Sometimes the slider can fall off completely or it might not be clenching the teeth right anymore. Unfortunately, you may need to replace the slider entirely to be able to use your backpack.

Attach a New Slider

If the slider is broken and will no longer attach to the teeth properly, you will want to cut the broken slider off and replace it with a new one. The easiest way to do this is to purchase a zipper replacement kit to ensure you have all the moving pieces to replace the slider. If you’re unable to purchase a kit, you’ll need to take the old slider off yourself.

To do this, you will either need to cut the slider off using pliers or move the slider down to the bottom of the zipper and slide it off. When removing the slider, you may have to cut the bottom of the zipper where the stopper is, and sew it back together with a few simple stitches once the new slider is attached. When you’ve successfully removed the broken slider, take a new slider and adjust it to match up with the teeth. This step is crucial to ensure the slider is clenching the teeth and can maneuver correctly.

Use a Keychain or Paperclip to Replace the Pull

A keychain is probably the most appealing as it doesn’t look like a make-shift fix. Simply take your favorite keychain and attach it to the hole on the slider. You can also use a paperclip, string or ribbon the same way. As long as you’re able to easily pull your zipper, you should be good to go.

When it comes to backpack zippers, we can try our best to be careful and handle them with care, but sometimes there’s just no escaping these zipper issues.
