oh, the fun that we had: seussian sculptures

This classic Seuss-inspired project is usually done with small balls of play dough. I did not want to use our play dough and wanted the children to explore a different medium and so I came up with this. Our pool noodle slices are fantastic! They are great for water play, make for super fun stampers, are fun to build with when you add shaving cream, and have even become fried fish out in our play yard. After poking a few holes in them with some acrylic cocktail stirrers I picked up they…

Kindergarten Monster Sculptures

Teacher prep: cut little slits into the bottom of a cardboard tube The kids can bend the 'ears' down. Use those as tabs for gluing the 'monster' to it's 'base' ...which will later evolve into the monster's environment. Using tempera, with no water, paint the base and monster...leave no cardboard showing! I gave them blue, yellow and white...they mixed as they pleased. little preview of our monster embellishments...

Pre-K Abstract Sculptures

This is a super lesson to try with your young artists - it takes just a bit of prep and the results are so fun! You'll need craft foam, model magic, glue, scissors, pipe cleaners and small pieces of tagboard or railroad board. The inspiration for this lesson comes from the blog, Plastiquem. Before class, I used Elmer's glue to attach a small chunk of model magic to a piece of 5x5" square of railroad board. Due to time constraints, I pre-cut a bunch of shapes from craft foam (students can…

Alexander Calder Sculpture

Alexander Calder Stabile Sculpture Using only pipe cleaners, a rock (or other base like a chunk of Styrofoam), build a "stabile". Add whatever you have on hand. We had buttons and paper scraps and beads to add to ours. Any kind of wire will work, including the new plastic-coated wires in craft stores (in colors). This idea is found in "Great American Artists for Kids" by Kohl and Solga.
