It’s lights, camera, action for new mom, style expert and television host Lilliana Vazquez who recently revealed her son Santiago’s new nursery. It’s a one of-a-kind room created just for him with Mid-Century modern touches and inspiration from all over the world. Vazquez and her husband wanted a joyful, sophisticated space that focused less on a theme and evoked more of a welcoming feeling for their little one.

I knew we wanted something modern, sophisticated and warm for the space. Rich textures, a timeless palette and functionality drove the inspiration for our nursery design.

Without knowing the gender of their little one to be, Vazquez and her husband set out on a design adventure that centered around a few simple goals. “I knew we wanted something modern, sophisticated and warm for the space. Rich textures, a timeless palette and functionality drove the inspiration for our nursery design,” she shared. The couple was passionate about finishing touches unique to their family, heritage and personal travel history. “We wanted a piece of art that represented our diverse culture — the Otomi textile above his crib represents a timeless Mexican tradition that has been passed on generationally in my family,” said Vazquez.

When you don’t know the sex of your baby, I feel like you can really explore different palettes and lean into colors that allow for something unexpected and beautiful to happen in the space.

When it came to color, the two decided to take a somewhat nontraditional route with shades that avoided a rushed gender reveal. “This palette of cream, black and tobacco with pops of gold felt elevated and gender-neutral. When you don’t know the sex of your baby, I feel like you can really explore different palettes and lean into colors that allow for something unexpected and beautiful to happen in the space,” Vazquez said.

It was also extremely important to the couple that the majority of elements used in the room were planet-conscious and considerate of the next generation. “Pottery Barn Kids' sustainable and responsible values were important to us as parents that are doing their best to be good stewards of the planet for Santiago's generation,” she said passionately. “As a new mom, safety in the space is paramount. Pottery Barn Kids’ commitment to GREENGUARD Gold Certified products and sustainability gave me confidence in choosing each piece for the nursery. Those elements combined with excellent craftsmanship made this an ideal partnership.”

With her colors selected and safety standards met, it was time to get working on the furniture. The first and most important item on the list was the Nursery Works Compass Rocker. “For our nursery, I knew my preference in a rocker would set the tone for the entire space. The chair I chose is a chair I’d happily put in any room in our home. It has beautiful sculptural lines, an almost vintage feel and it’s a total statement piece,” she said excitedly. To complement the darker tone of the chair, Vasquez chose the Colca Plush Rug as a statement piece that weaved in the warmth she was looking for and complemented the light-colored wood on the Nursery Works Novella Convertible Crib.

The final touch was a sweet little book nook arranged with Acrylic Wall Shelves. “It's the details of the space that bring the nursery to life. The book wall embodies our family's commitment to learning and reading. We wanted books to be a part of his life from day one,” said Vazquez lovingly.

It’s better than I could have ever imagined! To see so many of my ideas translated into a space that we can enjoy as a family and that will play host to very special memories together is the most wonderful feeling in the world.

With all of the boxes checked off of her initial design list, it was time to add the only thing missing: baby Santiago. Vasquez stepped back to admire the brand-new space now perfectly complete with her newborn son. “It’s better than I could have ever imagined! To see so many of my ideas translated into a space that we can enjoy as a family and that will play host to very special memories together is the most wonderful feeling in the world. It’s my favorite room in the house.” she beams.
