A man drowned in a lake at Rancho Jurupa Park on Friday, June 30 after swimming out to try to retrieve a fishing rod in the water, Riverside County sheriff’s officials said.

Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies were dispatched to the regional park and learned that a man had entered the lake and swam about 30 yards to retrieve the fishing rod. Witnesses said they saw the man go under the water and that he never resurfaced, according to a RSO news release.

The man later was pulled ashore with the assistance of a boat. Despite life-saving measures, he succumbed to his injuries.

The identity of the victim has not been released.
