UPDATED:

The person killed  in the crash of a Cessna Skyhawk near French Valley Airport was identified Wednesday, July 5, as a 39-year-old Temecula chiropractor who was piloting the airplane.

Jared Alan Newman died when the airplane crashed and flipped mere feet east of the airport just before 2 p.m. on July 4.

The National Transportation Safety Board plans to examine the wreckage on Thursday after moving it to a secure facility in Chino, Jennifer Gabris, an NTSB spokeswoman, said Wednesday.

“Part of the investigation will be to request radar data, weather information and maintenance records. NTSB investigators will look at the human, machine and environment as the outline of the investigation,” said Gabris, who said the cause of the crash had not been determined.

The preliminary report is expected to be published in three weeks, Gabris said.

Newman worked at Southern California Spine & Joint Institute, about 2 miles south of the airport. A person who answered the phone there Wednesday declined to comment without first receiving permission from Newman’s family.

A 2021 post on the company’s Facebook page heaped praise on Newman.

“Let’s take a moment to give some love to Jared Newman and the way he’s jumped right in to help our patients. It did not take long for him to feel at home here at SCS&JI and we are so glad he’s on our team,” the post said.

Although the Federal Aviation Administration website lists Newman as a student pilot, the NTSB’s Gabris said Newman was recently certified as a private pilot for single-engine aircraft such as the four-seat Cessna 172.

Data from FlightAware.com show that the airplane took off from the airport at 1:28 p.m. and landed at 1:56 p.m., two minutes before the Coroner’s Office said it crashed. There also was a flight scheduled for 1:54 p.m. The FAA said the airplane crashed on takeoff.

The airplane had twice taken off and landed at the airport earlier Tuesday in flights that lasted 28 and 33 minutes. There were two similar flights Monday lasting 39 and 64 minutes. It was unclear who was flying the airplane then.

There was no update Wednesday on the conditions or identities of the 3 passengers, who had injuries described as serious, moderate and minor.

The airplane is registered to California Professional Flyers, a company that could not be located Wednesday.

The airplane was built in 1978. Sowards Aircraft Leasing owned the airplane in 2020 and CSA Aircraft Leasing owned it in 2019, according to FAA records.
