Some Ontario Mills mall visitors panicked on Sunday, July 30, after a few loud popping noises led shoppers to mistakenly believe there was an active shooting going on, authorities said. Police on social media announced there was no shooter and the mall was safe.

Around 7 p.m., 911 callers began reporting a shooting at the shopping center at 1 Mills Circle, according to Ontario Police Department Cpl. Emily Hernandez. In videos posted on social media, hundreds of people can be seen fleeing the mall.

It was not clear what caused the loud noise or noises that spooked shoppers.
