UPDATED:

The first bell of the 2023-24 school year rang Monday morning, July 31, as San Bernardino students returned to campus following summer break.

For middle and high school students, first day festivities began later this year than in the past.

San Bernardino City Unified, the first Inland Empire school district to resume classes this academic year, pushed back the first and last bells of the day to comply with Senate Bill 328.

Middle schools that used to start at 7:40 a.m. now start at 8 a.m., while high schools that began at 7:30 a.m. last year begin at 8:30 a.m.

Elementary schools were unaffected by the change.

Superintendent Mauricio Arellano, on his maiden first day as San Bernardino schools chief, greeted young scholars at Highland-Pacific Elementary School before heading off to San Gorgonio High.

Students at Highland-Pacific walked a red carpet onto campus as teachers and staffers celebrated their triumphant return.

Later this week in neighboring Riverside County, San Jacinto Unified begins classes Thursday, Aug. 3, and Perris Union High School District starts Friday, Aug. 4.

Elsewhere in the Inland Empire, students will return to campuses in the coming weeks.
