A Jurupa Valley man carjacked one vehicle and attempted to force his way into another after a desperate run across a freeway at the end of a pursuit before being arrested on Thursday, July 4, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.
The alleged crimes took place in a span of about a half-hour, authorities said.
The man took a car by force, although he did not have a gun, at 1:35 p.m. at the intersection of 4th Street and Grove Avenue in Ontario, police Cpl. Bill Lee said.
Then at about 2 p.m., Sheriff’s deputies then found the car at Haven Avenue and Civic Center Drive in Rancho Cucamonga. Deputies tried to pull over the 30-year-old man but he continued driving for four miles through the city until he crashed into a car at Haven Avenue and the 210 Freeway, the sheriff’s news release said. The driver of that car was treated for minor injuries.
“When the suspect crashed, he fled on foot onto the 210 Freeway,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Gloria Huerta said in an email. “He crossed all lanes of traffic across the freeway to the eastbound offramp and approached the rear of a stopped vehicle and tried to manipulate the back passenger door, trying to get in.”
That’s when deputies arrested him.
The man was on Post Release Community Supervision after a conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm, the release said. He was booked into West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of attempted carjacking, evading, hit and run, and resisting an executive officer. He remained in custody on Friday in lieu of $100,000 bail.
