Shelter in Solitude is a little uneven when it awkwardly tries to balance comedy with the drama of the main story. Good acting saves what could have been a very trite movie about an unlikely friendship between a death row prisoner and a prison guard.

My wife and I were very moved by this film. Siobhan Fallon Hogan manages to tackle a serious moral subject through a humorous lens; I don't know how, but she pulled it off remarkably. I have not been touched by a movie in this way in a long time, and I felt incredibly close to the characters. The entire main cast delivered incredibly rare performances. Fallon Hogan shows us how a very broken person can bring out the best in humanity in her interactions with a prisoner on death row (played by Peter Macon). One would think that she would be preoccupied with her own troubles, but she gives of herself temporally and spiritually in trying to break through to this man. While this film was released in 2023, it takes place in 2020 at the start of the Covid-19 lock-downs. Fallon Hogan's references to phrases such as "Essential businesses" and "Flattening the curve" certainly struck a chord and added an element of familiarity to the film. Highly recommend!
