UPDATED:

Thieves smashed a car through the front window of an Oceanside gun store early Monday morning and made off with a number of firearms, an Oceanside police official said.

It happened about 3:30 a.m. at Firearms Unlimited on Oceanside Boulevard about two blocks east of Interstate 5, Lt. Bryan Campagna said.

The thieves drove a car into the front of the store, defeated the security system and made off with an undisclosed number of handguns, Campagna said.

No further details were immediately available.

The heist share similarities with one in Poway on March 25, when a crew slammed a stolen Hyundai sedan through the front entrance of Poway Weapons and Gear in the middle of the night. Four people in face masks and gloves stormed inside, broke open display cases and racks and took 78 firearms.

Federal investigators and law enforcement officers in two states quickly tracked the getaway car to a home in Las Vegas. Before the day ended, they had recovered 35 guns, officials with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said days after the incident.
