Short-term rental owners in San Bernardino County’s unincorporated desert will need a permit by the end of March.

County officials expect many applications after new rules on short-term residential rentals take effect Dec. 5., so late applications won’t be penalized at least through the end of March, a county news release states.

Though applications will not be accepted until after Dec. 5, code enforcement officials can assist with applications.

On Tuesday, Nov. 5, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors approved new rules for residential units rented for 30 or fewer days in the unincorporated mountains and desert. Rules were already in place for the mountains, but rentals in the desert have gone unregulated, leading to complaints from residents and neighbors. The rules apply only to residential rentals and accessory dwelling units, including guesthouses and casitas. Other rentals, such as yurts, teepees and trailers, will be addressed in the future.
