Monika Ittig OBITUARY

Monika Ittig passed away peacefully at her home on July 24th. She was born in Minden, Germany on December 10, 1941. She worked as a laboratory chemist in Europe, before moving for a short-term exchange at UCR in 1968. This involved a large pay cut but she spent a warm New Year’s Eve at the beach and decided she would not leave. She met her husband, Brian, at the University and their son Simon was born in 1976. Starting in 1990 she developed a beautiful garden that occupied much of her time. She also became a docent at the UCR Botanic Gardens, where she volunteered for many years. Beyond plants, her main passion was travel. She visited 6 continents and would have been to Antarctica were it not for thick ice floes. She is survived by son Simon, daughter-in-law Robin, and her two grandchildren Marius and Skye. A memorial will be held at the UCR Botanic Gardens on January 3rd at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to UCR Botanic Gardens.
