Mabela the Clever

Based on a Limba Folktale from Sierra Leone

Retold by Margaret Read MacDonald
(shared with permission from Margaret Read MacDonald 4/11/2015)
In the early times some were clever and some were foolish.
The Cat was one of the clever ones. The Mice were mostly foolish.
But one little mouse was not so foolish.
Her name was Mabela, and her father had taught her cleverness.
Her father always told her,
Mabela, when you are out and about, keep your ears open and LISTEN.
Mabela, when you are out and about, keep your eyes open and LOOK
YOU.
Mabela, when you speak, pay attention to what you are SAYING.
Mabela, if you have to move, MOVE FAST.
Good advice for a mouse!

AROUND

One day the Cat came to the mouse village.

Dear Mice, I come to offer you a special invitation.
It has been decided that you may join the secret CAT CLUB.
The mice were SO excited. We get to join the CAT CLUB!
We get to join the CAT CLUB!
Yes, my dears. Come to my house on Monday morning and I will teach you all the
secrets of the CAT.
Monday morning bright and early, all the little mice were there.
Oh my, you have ALL arrived! How delicious-I mean, How delightful.
Now you must learn the secret Cat Club song.
The song goes like this: When we are marching,
We NEVER look back.
The mice all shouted loudly on the last FO FENG!
Now line up in a straight line.
Mabela got to march in front, because she was the smallest of them all.
And at the end came the CAT!
Now march into the forest called the Cat. And remember- never ever look back!
Off they marched. Mabela was leading the way so proudly.
When we are marching,
We NEVER look back.
The Cat is at the end-Fo Feng! FO FENG!
Every time the mice shouted FO Feng! the Cat would Fo Feng the last mouse in line.
(Make a grabbing motion with your hand (paw) when you shout Fo Feng! and then let
out a little eek.)

Mabela was marching happily along.

When we are marching,
We NEVER look back.
The Cat is at the end-Fo Feng! FO FENG!
(Repeat this several times. You can let out a little eek every time the cat Fo Fengs
another mouse.)
Suddenly Mabela remembered something her father had told her,
Mabela, when you are out and about
Keep your ears open and LISTEN!
She was not listening at all. Mabela stopped singing for a moment and listened.
She did not hear a long line of mice singing behind her. She heard a FEW mice.
And the Cats voice was very close!
Then Mabela remembered something else her father had taught her,
Mabela, when you are out and about
Keep your eyes open and LOOK AROUND YOU.
Mabela turned her head just a little to the left. Just a little to the right.
She did NOT see a long line of mice.
She saw a SHORT line of mice and the CAT was VERY CLOSE!
Then she remembered what else her father had said.
Mabela, when you speak,
Pay attention to what you are SAYING!
She listened to the words of her song.
When we are marching,
We NEVER look back.
The Cat is at the end-Fo Feng! FO FENG!
The cat is at the end? What does THAT mean? No one is watching the CAT!
Mabela turned right around. There was the CAT!
She had just FO FENGED the mouse behind Mabela!
Now Mabela remembered the LAST thing her father had taught her.
Mabela, if you have to move, MOVE FAST!
Mabela DOVE into the busesso fastso fast
That the Cat pounced on nothing but-thorns! OUCH!
So the cat was stuck and Mabela escaped and so did the other mice!
Mabela lived to tell this story.
She told it to her childrenand to her childrens children.
Limba parents are STILL telling this story to their children.
It is good to remember the things Mabelas father taught her.
Mabela, when you are out and about, keep your eyes open and LOOK
YOU.
Mabela, when you speak, pay attention to what you are SAYING.
Mabela, if you have to move, MOVE FAST.

AROUND

Limba grandparents say, If a person is clever, it is because someone has taught them
their cleverness. So if your parents or your teacher try to teach you some cleverness,
keep your ears open and LISTEN!
