Motor control systems

The corticospinal (pyramidal) system
- enables organized
movements
The extrapyramidal system
facilitates fast movements
The cerebellum
- play a
role in coordinating movements,
posture and balance

Features of cerebellar
lesions
Ataxia (unsteady and jerky movements)

- truncal affects the posture and

balance lesion of the vermis movement of the ipsilateral limbs
Gait feet wide apart as patient walks
(broad base)

- rebound upward overshoot when the
limb is pressed downwards and
released

Intention tremor with past-pointing

Dysdiadochokinesia (inability to execute
rapid alternative movements)
Hypotonia (floppy limbs)
No wasting
Slow, pendular reflexes
Nystagmus
