Therearevariousthemesthroughoutthetexthowevertheonethatismostprominentis
thedangerofgreed.Theunfortunatetruthisthatgreedisaveryhazardousthing,bothtoyour
health,andtoyoursanity.Thisisshownveryearlyinthetextwhenthebuccaneersattemptto
killTheCaptain,andtakehistreasure.Whentheybreakintheyfindthevaluableitems,butthat
isntenoughforthem.Insteadofmakingoffwiththesilvertheystickaroundlookingforamap
whichgivesthetaxcollectorsenoughtimetoarrive,andwhichendsupleadingtothedemiseof
oneofthebuccaneersnamedPewbywayoftrampling.Alasthisisonlyoneofmanyexamples
ofthedangerofgreedthroughoutthetext.Forinstancelaterinthetextwhenthepiratesendup
onSpyGlassIsland,anddontfindthetreasuretheydonotevenstoptothinkaboutwhat
mightvehappenedtoit.Theysimplykeepdiggingmore,andmoreholes,thisisrathersymbolic
asitcanbeusedtorepresentthepiratesgreedburyingthemalivedeeperanddeeperunderthe
cold,darksoil.LuckilyJimissmartenoughtoseethatgoldisnteverything,hedefeatsthe
desireforrichesbecauseheknowsthatgreedisneverending,andbringstroublewithit.I
sometimesamalsooverwhelmedwithgreed,yearningforsomethingIknowIdontneedor
canthave,butIwillnowremember

thathelpeditgetacultfollowing.TheclimaxoccursinChapter28ofthenovelwhenthe
piratesdiscoverthelocationofthetreasure.Theybegintodigaroundtheareacalmlyatfirst,and
thenincreasinglyfrantically.Afterdiggingholeafterholetheymakeashockingdiscovery.They
findwherethetreasureshouldbe,andlearnthatithadbeenremovedlongbeforetheyarrivedon
theIsland.ThepiratesbelievingthattheyweretrickedbyLongJohnSilverbecameinfuriated,
andwerefilledwiththeurgetokillhim.WhenthepiratesturnaroundtoattackLongJohn,they
areambushedbyBenGunn,andtheDoctor.Thetriojumpupandmaketheirgetaway
retreatingasfarfromthepiratesaspossible.ThentheyareaccompaniedbyJimHawkinswho
setswiththemtothecavewhereBenhidthetreasure.Latertheycarrythetreasureontothe
HispaniolaandpushoffwithLongJohnaboardleavingthepiratesaloneontheisland.

UnsurprisinglysuchliterarygeniusasTreasureIslandhasmorethanonetypeofconflict
addingtoitscomplexity,andgreatness.ThesetypesofconflictsareMansv.s.Man,Manv.s.
Self,andManv.s.Nature.Notunliketheclimaxtheseconflictsareeasilyidentifiableastheyare
graduallypresentedthroughoutthecourseofthenovel.Althoughattimesonemayfeelas
thoughtheconflictsarebeingpiledononeaftertheotherthisissimplynotthecase.Theyare
addedatthecorrecttimewiththehelpofRobertLouisStevenson'simmenseliteraryability.The
Manv.s.ManconflictisJimHawkinsversusTheCaptain,thisisevidentveryearlyinthetext

whereJimdoesntlikethewayTheCaptainacts,andevenblameshimforhisfathersdeath.
EventhoughTheCaptainsdeathisareliefitleavestheburden,anddangeroftheBuccaneers.
AnexampleoftheManv.s.SelfconflictistheinternalstrugglethatJimfaceswhenhehasto
leavehismother.Heistornbythedecision,andisgenuinelyunsureofwhetherheshouldgo,
andgettherichesforhismother,orifheshouldstayifbychancethebuccaneersreappear.The
Manv.s.NatureconflictiswhenJimhastotravelthroughharshseafaringconditions,andthen
navigateintotheunusuallynarrowharbor.TheManv.s.Manconflictisresolved,asearlyinto
TheCaptainpassesawayfromeitheramassivestrokeoraheartattack.TheManv.s.Self
conflictisresolvedsinceJimfinallymakesthedecisiontoleavehismother,andfortunatelythe
Buccaneersdonotreturn,andsheissafe.TheManv.s.Natureconflictisalsoresolvedsince
Hawkinsmakesthetreacherousfinallegofthejourney,andarriveswiththerestofthecrew
unharmed.Allofthesepositiveresolutions,andthemanytragediesthroughoutthetextmakethe
endingquitebittersweet,andverydeep.

bookintheirlifetime,itisntoneformypeersrightnow.Sadlymostpeopleofmyagehavelost
touchwiththewondersoftheenglishlanguage.Ifsomehavetroublecomprehendingasimple

sentenceinmodernenglishIfeelpaintryingtounderstandhowtheywouldreadOldEnglish.
Someofthesentencesinthenovelarehardtounderstandforsomeoffthemostlanguagesavvy
7thgraders,andsomecompletelyundecipherable.Forexampleonpage144whenBenGunnis
ramblinginhissemisaneslurhesays,No,saysyou.NorI,werent,neither.Thisisonlyone
ofmanyexamplesofBenGunnsramblingswhichoccupyagoodofthebook.Iwould
definitelyrecommendthebooktoanyonewhocouldmakesenseofit,andproperlyenjoyit.This
judgementisplacedinthesoontobereader.Youmustdecideifyouwillunderstand,and
cherishthemasterpiece,orifyouwillstrugglethroughthebooknotunderstandingasingle
sentence.
