MEDIA / PUBLIC RELEASE

On Thursday, March 24, 2016 at approx. 7:06 PM, Jackson Police Officers responded to the
Jubilee Service Station at 3210 Hwy 80 regarding a shooting. Upon officers arrival it was
learned that a black female later identified as Teletha Burks had been shot multiple times while
sitting in the driver seat of a small SUV near the gas pumps. She was treated on scene by AMR
and later transported to Merit Health Hospital where she was pronounced deceased shortly after
arrival.
During the course of the investigation, it was learned that an unidentified black male wearing
jeans, red shoes and a brown hooded jacket exited a black in color Dodge Avenger being driven
by an unidentified black female. The suspect approached the victim and an altercation ensued
between the two of them. The suspect produced a handgun and fired several shots through the
driver side window striking the victim. The suspect fled the scene in the black Dodge Avenger.
At approx. 7:50 PM Precinct 2 officers responded to the 3200 block of Washington St. regarding
the vehicle used in this incident possibly being parked. Upon officers arrival, they observed and
confirmed the identity of the vehicle. Officers were able to detain a black female believed to be
the driver of the vehicle and detained a black male subject later identified as Kendrick Bell. They
were both questioned regarding this incident.
Subsequently, Kendrick Bell has been charged with one count of Murder, one count of
Shooting in an Occupied Vehicle and one count of Convicted Felon in Possession of a
Firearm. Hes been booked into the City Jail awaiting an Initial Court Appearance. The
investigation is ongoing and the motive is still under investigation. The driver of the vehicle
was questioned and released.
