Brief about logos, ethos, and pathos

Brief introduction about a speech given by Elon Musk

Purpose: To encourage the Caltech University students to pursue their

passions by conveying their personal stories specifically stated ethos,
logos, and pathos. Under the Title “Magicians Of the 21st Century”.

Event Date: 15 June 2012

Stories: Elon Musk

LOGOS:

Musk talked about their confusions in life when he was in his post-
graduation by stating that “When I was young, I didn’t really know what I
was going to do when I got older. People kept asking me. But then
eventually, I thought the idea of inventing things would be cool.

ETHOS:

Musk talked about the past 300 years story that we cannot even
imagine 300 years back that we will be able to fly, we will be able to
communicate long-distance and having the access to the world with
internet by stating that “300 years, the things we take for granted today,
you’d be burned at stake for. Being able to fly. That’s crazy. Being able to
see over long distances, being able to communicate, having effectively
with the Internet as a group mind of sorts, and having access to all the
world’s information instantly from almost anywhere on the earth. This
stuff that really would be magic – that would be considered magic in times
past.
PATHOS:

Musk stated that he took a lot of things granted in his life which he
must not take as the things we took as granted plays a very important role
in our life sooner or later. The things he stated that to give credibility to
the statement is “I think it actually goes beyond that, there are many
things that we take for granted today that weren’t even imagined in times
past, that weren’t even in the realm of magic. So, it goes beyond that. So, I
thought, well if I can do some of those things – basically if I can advance
technology, then that is like magic and that would be really cool”.

Evaluation of Speech using the Logos, Ethos, Pathos

LOGOS:

 As Elon Musk step up to the podium, he thanked all the audience

present there and said “crazy person” to himself, in my opinion, he
tried to convey a message to their audience that he was too crazy still
he is a successful person today. Being crazy doesn’t matter that you
are not able to be successful.
 Musk stated he has an existential crisis because he always trying to
figure out “what does it all means”, what’s the purpose of the thing.
So, this implies that he always talks on logic and create things which
have some usage or reality behind them.
 Musk talked about their academic background like how he dropped
out his post-graduation and spent their time with the internet to
explore more by stating that he studied “physics and Business” to
know how universe work and how business work.

ETHOS:

 Musk told the audience that in 1995, he came out of California to try
to figure out how to improve the energy density of electric vehicles.
 At second, he created “PayPal” as first PayPal was only a
conglomeration of financial services and how he upgraded that and
made an e-mail payment convenient.
 Then he jumped on “Space-X” and the former is the basis for Tesla
and SolarCity.
 He talked about SpaceX that when he initially started the SpaceX, he
thought there’s no way to start a rocket company.
 Then he told his story how he went to Russia to look a refurbished
ICBM so that he could buy that.
PATHOS:

 As the Musk started his speech, he said that he was trying to think
what’s the most useful thing that he can share with the audience that
can be helpful and useful to them in their future. So, it implies that
musk is trying to make an emotional connect with the audience as he
will share some useful things which might get help for them in their
future.
 He talked about how his friend made him watch a bunch of videos of
rockets blowing up.
 He also told that making a rocket isn’t easy because he never built
any physical thing before.
 He also shared his failure that he failed 3 times but still, he did not
lose the hope for trying next another time.
