DISCHARGE PLANNING:

1. Medication

Burn patients may be discharged home with several different medications. Do health
teachings to the patient, regarding the different possible side effects as well as the used of the
drugs.

If the patient is taking any pain medications, advised them not to drink alcohol, drive or
operate machinery or vehicle.

Advised them also not abruptly stop any antibiotics even if they are feeling well, without
the doctor’s order.

If there is any allergic reactions, immediately notify the physician.

2. Exercise

Discuss to the patient, the importance of exercise, active or passive, as this will promote
good circulation, prevent loss of muscle strength and may improve well being. Feelings of
fatigue and weakness will gradually improve. Taking naps and engaging in light activity will help,
but advised the patient not to do any strenuous activity or heavy lifting until clear by the
doctor.

3. Treatment

Emphasized to the patient the importance of follow up care and referrals, which will be
helpful in their recovery. Complete course of medication is also essential to promote healing.

4. Health Teaching

Advised the patient that the wound or incision should be kept clean and dry to prevent
occurrence of infection and promote healing. Teach the patient proper ways to clean the
wound using soap and water, as well as proper ways in changing the bandage or dressing.
Check with the doctor, when the patient will be allowed to bath or shower.

5. Out-Patient

Patient may need to engage in physical or occupational therapy, to assist them in their
recovery. Crutches, wheelchair, or bath seat equipments may be advised to assist them also in
their recovery. Doctor and the burn team will be the one to determine which equipments are
needed by the patient.
6. Diet

A well-rounded, nutritious diet with plenty of fluids is important in the healing process.
Patients should start with small, frequent meals.

Foods rich in vitamin C and protein will also be advised to promote healing of the wound.

7. Spiritual

Help the patient strengthen his/her self esteem, by encouraging him to have increased
family or friends bonding, as well as going to church. This will help him to strengthen not only
his self esteem but as well as his faith. This may vary depending upon the culture and religion of
each patient.
