IN-TEXT DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

The author said that Mrs. Granger was smaller than most but
seemed like a giant. After reading page ten, discuss why did the
author choose to use this language to describe Mrs. Granger and
how does it contribute to the story.

Look at the illustration on page 9 of Mrs. Granger. Based on the


author's description of her on pages 6 & 7, what are some other
words you could use to describe her.

After reading Mrs. Granger's letter home on pages 10 and 11,


compare and contrast your own thoughts about dictionaries to
Nick's. Do you agree or do you disagree with him? Why?

Read halfway down page 40. Before continuing to read, share ideas about what
you think Mrs. Granger is going to say to Nick?

After reading Mrs. Granger's notice (the text in italics) on page 43, talk about
whether or not you think Nick and his friends will now stop using the word
"frindle" with the new threat of detention

Read page 45 and then reflect on how you would respond if you were in Nick's
shoes after hearing Mrs. Granger's explanation of the history of the word "pen."

After reading page 46, share your predictions about what you think Mrs. Granger
has written in the letter Nick just signed.

After reading page 46, make your own inference as to what Mrs. Granger meant
when she said "And may the best word win."

would feel if you were in Nick's situation.

After reading page 78, we see that Nick's word "frindle" has become
a nationwide phenomena. If you were in Nick's shoes watching all of
the news reports on TV, how would you feel?

After reading page 78, talk about how "frindle" has now become a
nationwide concept. Do you think things will ever be the same again
for Nick? Why or why not?
