Activity 1: Small Group Activity
1) ACTIVATE (Creating Focus and Purpose) Drill: Recognizing 1/2 and 1/4 of a whole using flashcards

Review: The class will play the cabbage game. The pupils form a
big circle. The teacher shows a cabbage made of paper. Each leaf of the
cabbage has something written on it. Example: What is the 1/2 of 10?
What is 1/2 of 16?, let your classmate at your right answer the
question, etc. The cabbage will be passed around while the music is
being played. When the music stops, the pupil holding the cabbage will
get a leaf from the cabbage, read and follow what is written on it. This
is done until the leaves of the cabbage were taken.

Activity 2: Motivation
Present a picture of a family eating snacks with the children.
What are they doing?
How many are there in the family?
How do they share their food?

2) ACQUIRE Activity 3: Presentation & Discussion


(Acquiring new knowledge and skills, forming values Session 1
and attitudes) Mother bought 12 apples for her 4 children. She gave equal
number of apples to each child. How many apples did each of her
children received?
How many children does mother have?
How many apples did she buy?

Mila has 8 oranges. She wants to share them equally among her
4 friends. How many does each of her friends receive?

What is 1/4 of 8?
Possible strategies:
1. On the first round distribute 1 counter at a time to each of the four
groups. On the second round distribute another counter to each of the
four groups. So each group will have 2 counters each.

Let a pupil draw 12 pencils. Then another pupil draws the other half
of Cora’s pencil at home.

Arrange the jigsaw puzzle to form a hexagon.
How many pieces are used to form the figure?
What figure is formed?
How do you describe each piece?

3) APPLY, PRACTICE, FORMATIVE, ASSESSMENT Activity for Session 1 (Group Work/ Individual)
(Demonstrating the Learning) Call four pupils in front. Have them stand in a row. Give each child
an apple at a time. Until the apples are given away.
Does each child have the same number of apples?
What is 1/4 of 12?
Illustrate the 12 apples divided into fourths.

1. Draw 1/2 of the given sets of objects.
2. Box the given 1/2. Encircle the other half.
