STEN4005: Advanced Concrete Design and Construction

Assignment One: Group Design Project
Submission on 6th October 2020, 3:00pm
(In-class submission or alternatively via email before the deadline)
General: Assignment One: Group Design Project
This group project involves civil engineering design works: variables of development
to be addressed include analysis and design of a prestressed concrete bridge
Groups: Teams of three are to be self-selected; names forwarded to staff in-class in week-one.
Contribution shall be equitable. Some activities, or part of the activities, shall be done

for activities distribution.
Submission on-or-before 18 April 2019, 4:00pm, to the Assignment Office
Task: Design of a T-roff bridge project. Refer to the drawing and more information in a
separate document.
Activities:

1. Overview: (i) specify relevant loads on the bridge deck and the supporting
structure, (ii) state the approach for the analysis and design of the bridge, (iii)
state relevant standards, (iv) state assumptions necessary for carrying out the
detailed design, and (iv) submit a design report and an executive-A4-summary
page (with drawings and descriptions) to present the overall design outcome.
2. Prestressing: (i) determine longitudinal section and cable layout, (ii) calculate the
prestress losses, and (iii) determine prestressing force
3. T-roff section: (i) provide an estimate of the T-roff section sizes, (ii) check concrete
stresses at transfer, (iii) check concrete stresses at service condition, (iv) calculate
ultimate flexural strength, and (v) check the combination effect of shear and
torsion
4. Drawings: provide drawings to show the outcome of the detailed design. All
drawings must be legible and presented professionally.
5. Teamwork and self-management: organise meetings and send all minutes; ensure
compatibility between work & member- contribution; academic writing; report
presentation (structure, formatting and referencing)

Note: all activities require relevant references to be clearly indicated.

Format: Project submissions shall be bound (stapled or two-hole punched) and presented with
the names of t h e group members and an indication of each member’s involvement in

1
specific activities. Names of the members working individually on any particular
sections of the report must be indicated so that marks can be allocated individually.
Project report is expected to be concise, clear and professionally presented. The
minimum font size is 11 point.
Marks: This assignment contributes 30% to the total unit mark. Marks will be awarded for
the content, feasibility of solution, decision justification(s) and application of
referenced data sources, public safety of solution, clarity, level of detail, format and,
style/presentation. The allocation of the marks shall be based on group and individual
marks. If individual activities are not stated, all marks will be distributed equally.
Presentation:
Groups shall be expected to present their design and construction method in an Oral
Presentation as part of Assignment TWO.
Further detail of the Assignment TWO shall be released later.
Dr Thong Pham: Unit Coordinator

Notes:
 All queries regarding the project requirements should be directed to the Unit
Coordinator and Lecturers during class-consultation periods. Any further queries can
be directed to the Unit Coordinator by emails, or in person at a pre-agreed time.
 ALWAYS discuss any information needed with the Unit Coordinator and/or the
Lecturers BEFORE arranging external consultations.
 The project provided in this assignment is for you to work as a student project in this
Unit only. You shall not contact anyone not assigned to assist you with the project
for any reason. If you require further information or clarification, please contact the
Unit Coordinator.

Acknowledgement:
Thank you to Mr Paing Min Htet for providing the bridge drawing and the project brief
