The revolt of Diego Silang

A rebel leader who’s smart, compassionate, conversant, and someone who

belongs to principales group, urged the revolt against the cruelty and grievances fueled

by the Spanish government. In year 1730-1763, Diego Silang y Andaya preceded a

rebellion against the stemming abuses and leadership of the Spaniards. He thinks that

self-governance should manipulate and govern the Ilocanos – specifically, should be led

by Ilocano natives and officials, not the legislating power of Spaniards. Nonetheless, he

sought for power and asked for the British alliance to behead the Spaniards and won

over their regimen. The revolt primarily, was caused by the eagerness of Silang to put an

end to the ill-treatment of the ruling government and making Ilocos, a city ruled by its

natives, aiming to eradicate abuses and unjustly treatments. Spain allied with the France

government against the British government – who’s desires is to diminish the Spanish

Empire. Silang volunteered himself to lead in behalf of the British forces, whilst the

Spaniards, who are grieving for power, ought the help of Catholic Bishops in Vigan –

who in return, rejected Silang’s agenda. He then was appointed by British officials as a

governor in Ilocos, who was promised military reinforcement. With his governing power

and will to set Ilocos as an independent state, he was imprisoned but then also got

freed. On December of the year 1962, Silang declared the independence of Ilocandia,

who was named as “Free Ilocos” and efficaciously won over in terms of proclaiming

Vigan as the capital. British government summoned for his help to conquest against
Spanish governance. Unfortunately, Silang was betrayed by his companion, who was

paid by the Spaniards to kill Silang, as this means their revolt against him. After his

reign, his wife, Gabriela Silang continued his plan on putting end on the dominating

power of Spain in the city of Ilocos.
