He Said It with Arsenic

~Ruskin Bond

Ruskin Bond's 'He Said it With Arsenic' portray the avaricious people, who deliberately
ignore the nearest relations, give up self-respect and are tempted to cheat anybody for
amassing unqualified wealth.

The story “He Said It with Arsenic” is about Rusty and his father’s cousin, Uncle Bill who
shares an apartment with him for some time in Dehra Dun. Uncle Bill is shown to have dual
personality, one as a true gentleman and another as a killer, who poisons people. This
bizarre way of murdering people that creates no suspicion is the main surprise in the story.
The story portrays how a selfish man is capable of killing the fellow human being in order to
seize his wealth. Uncle Bill used poison to finish rich friends and relatives so that he could
claim their property. Even when he was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment of seven years,
he did not abandon his criminal behaviour. At last he was victimized by his scheme. He was
forced to drink lethal concoction which he had prepared for others.

The story is also peppered with dry and dark humour, an example of this can be found in
the very last line of the story when Uncle Jones admitted that he mixed arsenic in only one
glass of sherry to Rusty to kill him, Rusty still considered him a gentleman in that instance.

The author’s interest to write a crime fiction is revealed through this story. Moreover, the
story guides the readers that there are suspicious psychopaths like Uncle Bill and one needs
to be alert to coexist with them.
