The work started with historical outlook on what is today known as Nigeria. Prior to 1914 Amalgamation of
southern and northern protectorates, there was no country in the world by name Nigeria but there existed Yoruba,
Igbo, Tiv, Benin etc nations for hundreds of years in the area later called Nigeria, a name Fredrick Lord Lugard the
first Governor General the new created state adopted from her mistress Flora Shaw. After series modifications,
Nigeria later got her independence in 1960 with Abubakar Tafawa Balewa as the Prime minister. Since then,
Nigeria has been suffering one crisis or another arising from unhealthy ethnic and religious cleavages. This later
culminated to the first coup of January 15, 1966.

Because the coup was spearheaded by Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna and Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu who are
Igbos, it was designated Igbo coup. However, many facts reveal that the actual causes of the coup are: high level of
corruption in the government, Tiv riots and finally the most proximate cause which is the violent political crisis in
Yoruba land. The inability of Prime minister to control the violent conflict which claimed many lives and
properties and the attempt to save western Nigeria from alleged complete subjugation by Brigadier Maimalari
starting from 17 January 1966 were what actually made the coup plotters to strike earlier.

It is noteworthy that prior to 20th century, the eastern part of today's Nigeria was known as Biafra. While anti-
Biafra school of thought held that Biafra want to secede due to selfishness regarding the oil in their region, that the
secession was due to Ojukwu's over ambitiousness and that Biafra trying to annex by force her neighbouring ethnic
group, the pro-Biafra camp is of the view that the demand for Biafra freedom is as result of anti Igbo pogrom and
anti-East in Nigeria in terms of marginalization. The people of Biafra went for war because Nigeria first invaded
and attacked them on July 6, 1967 at Garkem; the Biafran Government has to respond in defence of its people.

The British Government under Harold Wilson because of their unease with a rich and powerful country emerging
in Africa and because of their selfish economic interests gave their full support to Nigeria Government to crush and
get Biafra emasculated by supplying arms and other necessary aid to them neglecting all the principles of just war.
Many remarkable technological achievements of Biafra in her infancy instead of gaining them international
admiration gained for them international aversion, a reason for a strange British-Russian alliance to defeat Biafra.

The Yorubas who the Igbos actually risked their lives to save from the oppressive hand of the northern hegemony
turn out to be against them. Awolowo was rewarded with federal finance minister for supporting Gowon to crush
Biafra; he was the one that actually suggested the tight economic blockage namely the starvation of children and
women. Obasanjo was also very instrumental to FGN in crushing Biafra. This untrustworthy and ambivalent
actions exhibited by Yoruba people during war made the Igbo not to trust them again. Although, they later
regretted, the deed has already been done; the subjection of the Igbo (Biafrans) to political domination has robbed
them of their enterprising and creative freedom.
