1. Define ethics.

Ethics etymologically comes from the Greek word ethos which means custom, usage, and
character. Ethics refers to the concepts of right and wrong conduct. Furthermore, ethics is
basically a branch of philosophy dealing with the issue of morality. Moreover, ethics consist of
the rules of behavior. It certainly defines how a person should behave in specific situations. It
could be acceptable or unacceptable behavior or describe as ethical or unethical. Ethics is mostly
used on ways of behaving in a given field, which is popularly known as “professional ethics”.
2. What is the difference between ethics and morals?
Ethics is about what is good or bad, right or wrong, and acceptable or unacceptable
behaviors. It is doing what is good and avoiding what is bad. On the other hand, moral is
concerned with the principles of right and wrong behavior and the goodness or badness of human
character. An individual’s conduct is referred to as his morals, and if he falls short behaving
properly, it is considered immoral. The distinction between ethics and morals could clarify
different dimensions of our lives. However, these two different terms can be used
interchangeably. Ethics and morals are can be used as equivalent terms that refers to traditional
manners, customs, habits, systems of values or character of the community.
3. Differentiate ethics from aesthetics, etiquette, and technique.
In ethics, we are putting a value on our actions. However, not all that is valued to be good
and bad are part of ethics. Valuation can be also part of aesthetics. The word aesthetic comes
from the Greek word aesthesis which means sense or feeling. Aesthetics is a branch of
philosophy that deals with the nature of beauty and taste, as well as the philosophy of art. It
examines subjective and sensory-emotional values, or sometimes called judgments of sentiment
and taste. Aesthetics is necessarily interdisciplinary and may be interpretive, prescriptive,
descriptive, or a combination of these. These judgments are based on what we see, hear, smell, or
taste. It is leaning towards our taste. When we talk about taste it is subjective. For example,
people in the West may value Classical design inspired by Ancient Greece and Rome, while
people in the East may not find this style aesthetically pleasing. Another example is the works of
art. It is judged on aesthetic value and can have radically difference price tags on the basis of
appearance and creator, even if the materials used are identical. Besides aesthetics, there is
another way we can value judgment on the goodness and badness of actions and it is what we
call etiquette. Etiquette is the set of conventional rules of personal behavior in polite society,
usually in the form of an ethical code that delineates the expected and accepted social behaviors
that accord with the conventions and norms observed by a society, a social class, or a social
group. Etiquette tells us what is proper to do in specific situations. For example, table etiquette –
these are the rules used while eating, which may also include the use of utensils.
Activity 2: Analyzing Case

Last June 11, 2020, the Lucban Municipal Police Station (LMPS) posted on their
This post became viral on the world-
wide-web. Comments on this post flooded the different social media platforms. This particular
post tells women to avoid wearing certain clothes.
You need to analyze this case. Is this an ethical problem? There are conflicting thoughts
on the post of LMPS. Are clothes just a matter of aesthetic? or Can clothes become an ethical
problem? Explain your answers. Explain it in 7 to 10 sentences.

For me, it not an ethical problem but the eyes of other men are the problem. It is not our
fault to be sexualize just because we wear short clothes or revealing clothes. We can wear
whatever we want and the problem is not on us. It is just a matter of aesthetic. If men, see our
clothes to be the problem why we are being sexualize then it is just based on their taste. Every
single day, there is a report about sexual messages or sexual harassment of women. Self- and
other- clothing judgments varied by the target's age, marital status, and parental status, and for
other-judgments, by social class and generation. Results suggest that women's bodies are socially
monitored and that sexual subjectivity is suppressed through the stigmatization of women's
sexualized dress. However, we should not teach women how to dress but rather teach men not to
rape.
