“Cita Astals Recounts Struggles with Mental Disorder” Reaction Paper

Introduction
Cita Astals was one of the most famous actress during the year 1992 in a classic local TV
show called, Home Along Da Riles and she became a politician after in the succeeding years.
Unfortunately, she went through a depressing stage after she lost in one of the elections as a
Counselor. On the year 2009, she experienced hearing random voices talking inside her head
that wouldn’t stop. She could not understand where it was coming from and who they were,
and it had greatly affected her well-being. On the same year, Cita was eventually diagnosed
with a mental disorder called, Bipolar Type 1 (Mania) disorder. Three years has passed, Cita was
interviewed by Ms. Korina Sanchez in a local radio station, DZMM, talking about her journey on
recovering from her condition.

During the interview, Cita was in disbelief that after 3 years she was able to regain
herself against her illness. She initiated to share her story to the public especially on how she
coped up and became optimistic to those people who were suffering the same mental disorder
that she had. Despite the unfortunate events and the humiliation that she went through, Cita
still managed to break the stigma about Mental Disorders.

Insights
The journey of Cita Astals was inspiring because the way she approached her mental
disorder can help a lot of people in this generation on how to cope up with certain challenges in
life. Confidence is usually the hardest part to regain especially in her situation that she is a
known artist and politician. But she found her way to seek for treatment and she even managed
to study and discuss the chemical imbalance, specifically Dopamine and Serotonin, that affected
her cognitive behavior. There were a lot of symptoms that she mentioned during the interview
regarding Manic Episode and at the same time she also expressed that compliance to the
medication is also important in the process of recovery. It was evident that Cita really struggled
fighting against an invisible enemy, but she prevailed because of her strong will to hold on
hope. Imagine being trapped in your own thoughts and then one day the media had to
disrespectfully ambushed you and bring you to the Psychiatric facility without knowing. That
part was really disheartening for me.

Two things that really strike me the most are, 1) Caring for a patient diagnosed with
Bipolar should take a lot of patience. One must not be carried away by their invincible attitude
because sometimes they would say something hurtful, but they don’t really mean it. Like Cita,
all they need is someone to listen to them and not dismiss their thoughts, even if they do
appear slightly difficult. 2) Anyone can be affected by this condition at any time in their lives.
From the richest to the poorest on the planet and even the most loved and supported by their
family around them can experience it. But once the mania or depression strikes, none of the
valued people and things can be seen. So why do we stigmatized it and treat it differently to
physical illness? Mood stabilizers are one way to treat them and after all, mental illness does
not discriminate.

Conclusion
One of the lessons that I have gained from Cita Astals’ story is that, one must know how
to accept defeat and seek for help. It is also timely that our devotion with Maam Recile was
about a reminder that God has Greater plans for us. It may not be the plan that we wanted and
sometimes the process can be painful and hard, but it could also mean that He is also preparing
us for the greater future. Unfortunately, during the time when Cita was diagnosed of Bipolar
disorder, not a lot of people were knowledgeable enough to understand this illness but rather
they would see this as a result of drug addiction. It took so many years to finally raise this
awareness that mental disorders are not just “inarte”, but it is an illness in the mind that one
cannot control. The interview of Cita Astals speaks volumes nowadays because the social media
is the most powerful tool that can educate anyone. With that said, one must be careful with the
use of words when posting because in a world that we can be anything, I pray that all people
will choose to be kind.
