Autoclave has safety head to prevent damage to the body and parts of the autoclave by
safe release of pressure in case of accidental or unusual pressure build up. Unless otherwise
specified, reactors are equipped with Inconel disc 600 having a burst rating of 1450 psig
Pressure at 500° C. (Refer table below to determine the MOC & rating of your Rupture disc as
per MOC & MAWP of Autoclave). Although the burst rating for a new disc can be predicted
within reasonably close limits, metal fatigue, corrosion and high temperatures will change this
rating to a considerable degree. Any disc that has been stressed repeatedly to pressures
greater than 70 per cent of its initial rating will burst at a lower pressure. Therefore, rectors are
usually equipped with rupture discs having room temperature ratings at least 10 per cent above
the expected maximum working pressure. Raising the temperature of a rupture disc will also
lower its burst rating. Corrosion problems with disc are usually limited to reactions involving
strong mineral acids, strong organic acids and \ or wet halogens etc. These agents attack disc to
varying degrees. It is advisable to replace the rupture disc after around every 1000 hrs of usage
or every 6 months which ever is earlier. The direction of the Rupture disc elbow should always
be opposite the operator & if possible a hose pipe should be connected to the elbow & taken to
a safer place. Since the reacting chemicals are not in the scope of Amar Equipments Pvt. Ltd., So
it is the customer duty that the release of gas during venting is either absorbed by a safe
absorbent or it goes safely in the pressure relief drum, which will hold or contain the gases.
Thus sudden rupture of disc under pressure will not affect the operator present.

Replacement of the safety rupture disc:

To replace a ruptured disc, Remove the rupture disc adaptor from the autoclave head &
then remove the ruptured disc in between the orifice ring & rupture disc cone. Take a new
rupture disc & set the various parts in position as shown in the assembly drg. Insert the adaptor
back into the head of the autoclave and screw the assembly in to place, and tighten it firmly.
4.5 Magnetic Drive Coupling:
It is a zero leakage & maintenance free drive which consists of a magnetic coupling
directly driven by the motor to prevent leakage during rotation under rated pressure. It consists
of an external shell which is driven by the motor. A stationary shell completely isolates the
external shell from the inner rotor. High energy permanent (rare earth) magnets are fixed
inside the inner rotor and on the inner side of the external driver. The specially designed rare
earth magnets used in this drive have excellent stability and they operate for longer periods
with little or no flux degradation. The inner rotor is supported by Teflon Peak bushings to
provide long life & chemically inert stirring system. Magnets in the outer drive are also fully
enclosed and supported by twin high quality sealed ball bearings for smooth operation and long
life. The outer rotor driven by Motor rotates the inner rotor (by magnetism, without any

Page : 11 of 64 LABORATORY AUTOCLAVE

contact) & the stirrer shaft connected to the inner rotor, thus ensuring leak free stirring. A
water cooling jacket is provided at the bottom of the drive to prevent the temperature of
magnets to rise beyond 200°C. Cooling water supply is most during strring, heating & cooling of
the autoclave for the thermal safety of magnets as the same can get demagnetized above
200°C in the event of failure of water circulation.

On customer’s requirement.

Magnetic Drive

4.5.1 Benefits of magnetic drive over stuffing gland box sealing:

 It never leaks. Stuffing box system leaks as soon as cones, `O` rings or shaft wears out.
 In stuffing box gland the cones & `O` rings need replacement after every 200 – 400 hrs of
working. Where as in magnetic drive only the teflon bushes have to be replaced after
minimum 2000 hrs of working. It can go as high as 5000 hrs without replacement.
 Zero Leakage implies zero maintenance.
 No wear & hence large savings in maintenance cost for years.
 Zero breakdown of the Autoclave.
 Safety while using toxic and hazardous chemicals as its leakage is totally prevented.
 No waste of expensive liquids through leakage.
 Almost no losses since these are friction free in synchronous operation.
 Minimum vibration transmission & hence smooth running.
 The coupling is flexible & hence any over load results in couplings slippage, thus preventing
any breakage or loses of electric motor & parts.

Page : 12 of 64 LABORATORY AUTOCLAVE

4.5.2 To dismantle the shaft:
If the autoclave shaft is broken, worn out or to be changed, it has to be dismantled by
first opening the autoclave head. Mount it on trolley head holder & then without disengaging
the magnetic drive, hold the drive top by one hand & unscrew the shaft by the other. If the
threads are jammed or shaft is broken at threads, then you have to disengage the complete
magnetic drive unit with shaft (as the shaft may not come out) & send it to us. To remove the
magnetic drive follow steps as below.

4.5.3 To dismantle the magnetic drive:

If there is any leakage, drive failure due to over heating or bush replacement required,
the magnetic drive has to be dismantled from the autoclave. To disengage the magnetic drive
first disengage the motor, remove the autoclave head & mount it on a trolley. Remove impeller
& stirrer clamp then remove the shaft as explained above. Use the special spanner (supplied to
you) & grip it just below the outer shell of magnetic drive. Unscrew the magnetic drive from the
head by rotating the drive anticlockwise.

Never Open The Magnetic Drive Unit (Internal Parts) Without Prior Permission or
Intimation to M/s. AMAR EQUIPMENTS PVT. LTD.

4.6 Ball Valve (Optional):

Ball valve is fitted on the head of the Autoclave. Its main function is to fill powder /
liquid with the help of funnel at atmospheric pressure. It is a valve with bigger opening for
charging. Also many times material is charged through this port after assembling the autoclave
& doing the initial pressure leak test.

Page : 13 of 64 LABORATORY AUTOCLAVE

4.7 Flush Bottom Valve (FBV) (Optional):
Flush bottom valve is connected to bottom of the Autoclave vessel. Its main function is
complete discharge of liquid from the autoclave from bottom. The valve spindle almost flushes
with bottom of the vessel to avoid any dead volume & settling of catalyst / liquid during stirring.
For temperature upto 250°C the valve is provided with the soft Teflon seat & for temperatures
above 250°C it has metal to metal joint without any soft seat.

4.8 Pressure Sensor (Optional):

Pressure sensor is located on ‘T’ connection (on the pressure gauge nozzle) with adaptor
having water cooling jacket (below the sensor). Its main function is to sense the pressure inside
vessel & give corresponding analogue 4-20 mA signal to the Pressure Indicator on the panel.
The Pressure sensor has a temp. limit of 80°C hence tap water circulation should be
continuously on during heating / cooling of Autoclave to avoid failure of the sensor due to over
heating in case of failure of water circulation. The sensor has a plug socket connector on the
cap to easily disengage the sensor cable from the sensor while lifting or moving the Autoclave
head. The Pressure sensor is normally Wika A-10 / equivalent model or optionally Wika IS-20 /
equivalent model for intrinsically safe application. Its main advantage is to give accurate digital
pressure indication which can also be used for safety high / low pressure alarms.

Pressure Sensor

Page : 14 of 64 LABORATORY AUTOCLAVE

4.9 Pressure Gauge:
Pressure Gauge is mounted on the head of the Autoclave as indicated. It is used to
measure the Pressure of the Autoclave & indicates the same in kg/cm2 or bar & psi. It is

4.10 Pressure Safety Valve (Optional):

Pressure safety valve is mounted on the pressure gauge or rupture disc nozzle of the
autoclave head. The safety valve acts as an additional safety as rupture disc is already provided
on all autoclaves. The Safety valves are spring loaded & its range is 500 – 1500 psi variable for
100 bar (1450 psi) MAWP autoclaves. The purpose of the safety valve is to release the excess
pressure of the autoclave whenever the Autoclave pressure exceeds the set pressure of the
safety valve. Once the pressure inside the Autoclave goes below the valve set Pressure the
valve closes. The safety valve is factory set at 1500 psi or as per MAWP of autoclaves. User can
reduce the pressure rating by loosening the checknut on the valve & unscrewing the hex nut on
the top to reduce the spring tension. The safety valves are supplied with Viton O ring; hence
any chemicals non-compatible to viton should not be used.

About to operate PID controller refer PID controller user manual.
Manual P.I.D. tuning:
While the auto-tuning function selects control settings which should prove satisfactory
for the majority of process, you may find it necessary to make adjustment to these settings if
some changes are made to the process or if you wish to `fine-tune` the control settings.
It is important that prior to making changes to the settings, you record the current
settings for future reference. Make slight changes to only one setting at a time and observe the
results on the process. Because each of the settings interacts with other, it is easy to get
confused with the results if you are not familiar with process control procedures.

Key Key Key Key

It consists of pressure sensor & digital indicator / Controller. The sensor & its wire are
supplied separately. Fix it on the `T` connection (on the pressure gauge) with adaptor having
water cooling jacket. Connect the wire on the sensor to the back of control panel (pressure). In
the pressure sensor always the red wire goes to positive terminal. The indicator / controller is
mounted on the control panel. It shows digital indication of the pressure in kg/cm2 or psi as
desired by a push button on pressure controller. A green LED indicates the pressure unit. To
set/read the desired pressure press the push button & you will see the set pressure & this can

Page : 22 of 64 LABORATORY AUTOCLAVE

be varied by using the setting knob / screw by a small screw driver. When the indicated
pressure goes above the set pressure, the controller activates the alarm. Before starting the
system, kindly ensure the following.
 Wiring is correct as per the wiring diagram. Wiring should be tight enough.
 The pressure sensor temperature should never exceed beyond 80°C. This can be ensured by
supplying tap water continuously through the cooling arrangement just before the sensor. The
cooling should remain on even after the reaction is over; otherwise the sensor may get heated
by heat transfer & may fail.
 The accuracy of the sensor is around 0.5% of range, Hence 0.5% of 160 bar i.e. 11 psi (1 bar) is
the maximum error the indicator may show over the entire range including zero pressure, but
the error will always be with in permissible limits.
 Zero & span setting pot are provided for kg/cm2 & psi readings to set the indicator to zero or
for span calibration if it shows any deviation in the readings. This pot is mounted on the back
of the pressure indicator. You have to open the panel to do the same.
 Temperature Safety Cut-off: When preesure alarm 2 exceeds the set point heater will cut-off.
PRESSURE CONTROL INSIDE AUTOCLAVE BY CONTROL VALVE: (Optional)
If you have opted for electrical / digital pressure control system then along with above
systems a solenoid valve (24V DC) will be mounted on the autoclave. Connect the solenoid
valve wire to panel head. When the process pressure goes above the set pressure, the control
system opens up the solenoid valve venting off the excess pressure. When the actual pressure
goes below the set pressure the solenoid valve will shut off.
CAUTION: The outlet of the solenoid valve should be taken to a safer area if toxic or hazardous
gases are used in autoclave.

4.14.3 AC Drive:
AC flame proof Motor is driven by an inverter drive which is mounted on the control
panel. The motor is started by first turning on the motor on/off switch. [The speed can be
varied infinitely upto maximum 1450 rpm for Autoclave upto 5 Ltrs. & upto 500 rpm for
Autoclaves from 10 Ltrs. to 100 Ltrs. using the speed variation knob]. The stirrer rpm is
indicated on the screen of the invertors. The thyristor drive ensures noise free & fine control of
the speed. It is totally maintenance free as compared to any mechanical speed variation
system. To stop the motor either turns the knob to zero or turn the motor switch off.
 The AC motor is a 3ph, 220v type & hence always use an inverter drive to run it & never
connect direct supply to the motor.
 The inverter drive is protected by any over load, over voltage, over current or any other
fault related to motor or drive. On such condition the drive will flash respective error & trip
with an alarm buzzer. The operator is thus alerted about the fault. He has to refer trips
information & remedies from inverter drive manual to fix the problem.
 The value of all the parameter of the drive are locked to prevent any mischief. To unlock
the drive parameters In SUP menu, select Cod = 2 & press enter. Desired parameter if required
can now be changed & keypad can be locked by putting Cod = 2 again. The default value of all
parameter & procedure to see a particular parameter can be found in inverter manual chapter
of table of parameters & data.

Page : 23 of 64 LABORATORY AUTOCLAVE

OR
For DC motor using DC vibrator (FOR A BASE MODEL):
The DC Motor is driven by a DC variator which is mounted in the control panel along
with indicator to display the rpm of the stirrer. Use the motor on/off switch to turn on the DC
Motor. Use the speed variation knob to infinitely vary the stirrer rpm up to 1000 rpm
maximum. The DC drive is also provided with an overload relay to give alarm for any faults &
trip off the drive & thus stop the motor & prevent any damage to the drive. 2 nos. short circuit
fuses are also provided in the drive. This safeguards the drive for any motor short circuit. If the
fuse blows OFF the display goes. Replace a new 5amp glass fuse on the DC drive by opening the
panel. The DC motor works on 180v DC supply, always run it through DC drive only.

NOTE:
 Always ensure that the motor shaft rotates in clockwise direction (when mounted & looking
from top). If not, interchange any 2 wires to the AC / DC motor so that it rotates in clockwise
direction. Separate Instruction manual is supplied for AC Inverter. Kindly refer the same for
precautions, malfunctioning or error indicated on display.
 The AC & DC drives are connected with plug socket inside the panel.

4.14.4 Polarity indicator:

To ensure that the phase, neutral & earthling of power supply are connected properly
ALL OK indicator is provided at the bottom of the panel for 50ml to 10Ltrs. autoclaves. Before
starting the panel the ALL OK signal should be checked & if required suitable wiring should be
done. If any problem shows on polarity indicator solve that problem at external main supply
input side. Don’t reverse any wires inside of the control panel.

4.14.5 Main on/off switch:

It is a M.C.B. which is mounted on the left bottom of the control panel. It is used for
switching the panel ON & OFF. It trips off the control panel whenever there is a short circuit,
higher than the rated current or other electrical fault to prevent any hazard.

4.14.6 Heater on/ off switch:

This switch is to turn the electric heater on & off. The switch gets illuminated when
turned on indicating that supply to the heater is on. However the heater is controlled
automatically by the PID depending on set point. The heater can be forced to off condition
irrespective of O/P from PID, by turning the heater switch off. The ct value has been set as 0.5
for electric heater usage. The heater switch should always be in ON position during any heating.
For jacketed autoclaves the O/P of the heater can be used to drive a solenoid valve at the inlet
of the jacket. However the ct value has to be set to 10.0 or above in the PID Page 10 settings.

4.14.7 Cooling on/off switch:

This switch is useful only if an auto cooling system (provided by AMAR) or external
cooling system / solenoid valve is connected to the panel. The switch should always remain on
when heating or cooling is required. The control to the cooling system is given by PID controller
to control the heating rate or when temperature goes above the set temperature & depends on

Page : 24 of 64 LABORATORY AUTOCLAVE

set temperature. The switch gets illuminated when ever the cooling is turned on automatically
from PID.

4.14.8 Motor on/off switch:

This switch is to turn on & off the supply to AC / DC motor. The switch gets illuminated
when turned on indicating that the supply to the motor is ON.

4.14.9 Gas flow on/off switch (Optional):

It is uses for on /off gas flow on/off.

4.11.10 Liquid flow on/off switch (optional):

It is uses to on off on/off liquid flow metering pump.

4.11.11 Alarm system:

The alarm system may consist of 1 or 2 alarm indicators depending on options & model
selected.
 Temperature Alarm: The alarm buzzer rings along with red flashing LED, when the
process temp. Goes above the alarm set point ASP2 on PID controller OR when PT 100
temperature sensor is open.
 Pressure Alarm: When the process pressure goes above the set pressure, this alarm gets
activated.
The operator can stop the buzzer by pressing the ACK acknowledgement key. But the
red light will disappear only when the fault is corrected or temp / pressure goes below the set
alarm valves.
Thus this system is very effective to prevent any accident due to sudden rise of
temperature, pressure or motor overload during run away or exothermic reactions.

4.11.12 Hater M.C.B.:

Depending on the heater kilowatt the heater M.C.B. is provided at the back of control
panel. This M.C.B. will safeguard temp. Controller, relay & heater in case of any over current or
short circuit. If there any problem related heating or power supply M.C.B. get trip & prevent
accident. After rectify that problem you can switch on the M.C.B. & start your heater

accuracy of RTD-PT 100 is within ±0.4o C.
 For Working Temperature above 400° C: K type thermocouple (Chromel-Alumel) temperature
sensor is provided for temperatures above 400o C as RTD-PT100 is not suitable for the same.
The accuracy of this temperature sensor is within ±2o C.

4.11.14 Flame proof temperature indicator:

It is uses for to mesure temperature at fpammable area. It fitted into a non flammable
enclosure and connected with reacter temperature sensor

Flameproof (FLP) Enclosure with Digital Temperature Indicator

4.11.15 Electric heater cut-off system or heater temperature controller:

This system provided for control heater temperature and to recover heater from burnt
out that’s coil by over temperature. For this system a PPI Neuro 100 PID controller is installed at
control panel. It measures & shows heater temperature by connected a thermocouple.
Thermocouple has installed at heater coil. So it measures heater temperature directly. To
control heater temperature user should give an alarm set point at page no-0 in heater
temperature controller. When heater temperature increase more than alarm set point,
controller cut off heater supply. There are two cut cut-off system provided at controller
 Heating cut-off while alarm replay latch enable condition:
In this method Alarm relay latch command enabled at heater temperature controller. So
once heater temperature increase more than alarm set point alarm replay go to continues
hold condition. Although your heater temperature decreased after cut-off relay that hold up
continuously. So heater temperature goes continuously off condition. To ON heater supply
user must acknowledge latch command at page no-0.
 Heating cut-off while alarm latch disable condition:
In this method alarm latch command disabled at heater temperature controller. So while
alarm on and off condition heater temperature goes cut off and heater on condition
respectively. Heater on off time depends on alarm hysterises set point.

5.0 OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES
5.1 AUTO - COOLING SYSTEM: (OPTIONAL)
The SS-304 water tank & mono block pump are assembled & mounted on the trolley at
base level. SS pipe with flexible SS braded teflon hose pipe & quick release coupling are
connected to cooling coil inlet & outlet. Auto-cooling system is effective for very fast cooling &
better temperature control mainly for highly exothermic/runaway reactions. In a PID controller
the cooling may be activated partially at intervals just before the set temperature to control the
rate of heating so that the overshoot is minimum. After the reaction is over, for cooling, the
autoclave can be set to lower temperature and pump cools the autoclave up to above 70°C (or
lower if chilled water or ice is used ) in very short period. For achieving very low temperature in
short period, donot recirculate the hot water, drain it off & continuously add fresh water. If
ordinary tap water cooling (without pump) system is employed, the water immediately turns in
to steam and hence to avoid back pressure and back flow of steam, positive pressure pump is a
must. If required FLP motor & pump can be provided on request.

5.2 HIGH PRESSURE LIQUID CHARGING SYSTEM: (OPTIONAL)

High pressure liquid charging system is useful to charge the liquid during the reaction under
pressure. Hence the liquid to be charged has to be under pressure higher than the autoclave vessel
pressure. The pot assembly is designed to take 100 kg/cm2 pressure unless specified.
Following material should be accompanied with a standard high pressure liquid charging
system.
 SS-316 (or M.O.C. as per your purchase order) Pot (½ L, 1L, 2L, 5L, or 10L as per your order)
fitted on SS Stand.
 SS-316, 0-100 bar, 2 ½” Dia. pressure gauge.
 SS-316 Pressure safety valve (500 – 1500 psi) (optional)
 Liquid inlet funnel & ball valve.
 Needle valve for nitrogen gas pressure / vent.
 Pot outlet needle valve.
 SS Braded high pressure teflon hose pipe (4 ft long from pot outlet to autoclave liquid inlet)
along with NRV & quick release coupling.
INSTALLATION:
The whole system is generally in assembled condition except for the pressure guage &
hose pipe. Connect the pressure guage at the top & the hose pipe from pot outlet to autoclave
vent or sparger valve (such that NRV & QRC are just before autoclave valve) & mount the whole
assembly on the autoclave trolley.
OPERATION:
Initially close the pot outlet valve & open the inlet valve & vent valve, charge the desired
quantity of liquid from the top funnel. After charging is complete close the inlet valve.
Pressurize the pot by N2 or similar gas from the vent valve to a pressure higher than the
autoclave vessel pressure. Open the autoclave vent or sparger valve (i.e. the valve on which the
pot hose is connected) & now slowly open the pot outlet valve. The liquid in the pot under
pressure enters the autoclave until the pot pressure goes below autoclave pressure. Close the

Page : 27 of 64 LABORATORY AUTOCLAVE

pot outlet & then the autoclave valve as the pot pressure falls below autoclave pressure. The
above system with weighing scale can be used to measure total volume / mass of liquid charged
at any point of time.
PRECAUTIONS:
 Ensure that the NRV direction is always towards the autoclave.
 Ensure that the pot pressure is higher than vessel pressure before charging.
 Never exceed 100 kg/cm2 pressure in the pot.

5.3 CONDENSOR (SHELL & TUBE): (OPTIONAL)

The condensor is a shell and tube type heat excharger used to condense the vent
vapours of the autoclave. The standard condensor assembly consists of.
 Condenser of MOC SS316 or as per your P.O., 0.1m2 / 0.2m2 size as per order fixed on SS
Stand.
 SS braded teflon hose pipe (3 ft long from autoclave outlet to condenser inlet)
INSTALLATION:
Just mount the condensor assembly on the trolley. The condensor is slightly inclined
from left to right towards condensate outlet. Connect the SS braded teflon hose pipe with quick
release coupling on the vent valve & other end to the left side tube inlet of the condenser.
Connect the cooling / condensing media (tap / chilled water) supply line to the shell of the
condenser such that water flows in reverse direction of vapour flow.
OPERATION:
Start the cooling media supply & then open the vent valve, the vapours if any under
pressure would pass through the condensor. The condensate can be collected at the other end
of condensor open to atmosphere. The shell & tube side of condensor is tested upto 10 kg/cm2
pressure unless specified.

5.4 REFLUX CONDENSOR: (OPTIONAL)

It is a single shell water cooled type condensor connected at the vent valve of the
autoclave. The main purpose of this condensor is to vent off the un-condensed vapours &
charge the condensed vapours back into the autoclave. SS knit wire mesh is used as packing
inside the tube. For hastelloy autoclaves glass beads are inserted.

5.5 CHAIN PULLEY LIFTING ARRANGEMENT: (OPTIONAL)

The chain pulley block capacity is 0.5 ton. This arrangement is preferred only for 10 Ltrs
& above capacity autoclaves. The system can be used to lift the head of the autoclave or bomb
or complete assembly. Upto 25Ltrs size the entire filled autoclave assembly with head, bomb &
heater chamber can be lifted together. However for 50 Ltrs & above size the head & bomb has
to be lifted separately. The chain pulley arrangement is thus required whenever.
1) The internal autoclave parts are to be cleaned or replaced.
2) The autoclave is to be charged.
Only the head is required to be lifted for (1) & (2). Disengage the drive as explained
earlier. Connect the clamp rod & hanger & lift only the head with the chain pulley block.

6.0 STANDARD OPERATING PROCDURE (SOP)

 First watch for the control panel “ALL OK” indicator at the bottom left side of the panel before
turning on the MCB.
 Before applying pressure or temperature to the autoclave ensure all the valves are in closed
position in order for proper reaction and prevent losses.
 Ensure that continuous water cooling is provided to the magnetic drive jacket & also for the
pressure sensor jacket / valve adapter jackets if provided, even after reaction is over.
 Never use the sampler valve for venting the pressure use only the vent valve.
 Do not exceed the maximum working parameters as indicated on the unit (name plate) or in
the manual provided.
 Minimum 40% & maximum 70% of the reactants are to be used in order for proper reaction to
take place.
 During heating never touch the heater plate or other body parts.
 Take gas pressure test periodically using nitrogen, depending on usage.
 The direction of the rupture disc & safety valve should always in opposite direction to the user
& preferably connected by a flexible hosepipe to a safe area.
 Ensure proper exhaust system for gas / vapors.
 Inconel 600 rupture disc not suitable for Ammonia & Ammonia mixture.
 Periodic maintenance of the whole unit should be done at least twice a year for long & trouble
free operation i.e. changing of rupture disc, pressure, testing etc.

8.3 Important Safety

Liquids and gases under pressure and High Pressure Fluid Ejection. (During Operation)
During Operation the pressure build up in the Autoclave when reaches the set point of
the pressure safety valve / rupture disc, the pressure safety valve pops up or rupture disc bursts
and releases the vapor or gases in the atmosphere, if the reactants are toxic in nature the vapor
or gas released can also be toxic which may cause immediate threat to human life.
Suggestion to avoid the hazard
The operator should release the gas in the water tank and the pipe leg of the safety
release valve / rupture disc should be immersed in the water to absorb the toxic gases, which
means that the end user should install a separate pressure relief tank. (For better
understanding a line layout shown below)

Liquids and gases under pressure / High Pressure Fluid injection or Ejection.
(During Maintenance)
During Maintenance if the auto clave is opened from its top disc end the residual toxic
gases from the Autoclave may be released into the atmosphere. These toxic gases may cause
immediate hazard to human life. (For better understanding a line layout shown below)

Suggestion to avoid the hazard

The service personnel should release the gas in the water tank by connecting the
vacuum pump to release the toxic gas and the pipe leg of the safety release valve should be
immersed in the water to absorb the toxic gases, again he has to do the nitrogen purging for
the safety. After nitrogen purging again he has to release the toxic gas by the vacuum pump in
the water tank, which means that the end user should install a separate pressure relief tank.

9.4 Procedure for Unpacking the machine.

Unpack machine carefully on arrival and check for transit damages. Check machine and
equipment’s according to packing list. Report the damages if any, to the manufacturer
immediately. The autoclave is already in assembled condition except for the mounting / fitting
of certain standard or extra attachments. These are all tied or packed in separate boxes. The
motor if packed separately has to be mounted on the stand to couple the motor with
autoclave. First fix the wheels (for a trolley model) to the base. Mount the temperature control
panel on the trolley top (for trolley model) by tightening the feet bolts at respective holes or
preferably place it at a distance (2m long cables provided) at a lower level or inside a proper
ventilated cabinet (If the area is flame proof). Fix the autoclave position on a leveled surface &
lock the wheels. The autoclave should be placed in a room with adequate & effective
ventilation. It is preferable to have a hood with an exhaust fan over the autoclave. This is the
most effective arrangement to vent off any accidental leakage of hazardous gases. Any parts or
equipment given separately should be bolted or mounted as instructed during the trials or read
the respective headings in the manual. Make all the electrical connections as indicated on the
back of the panel.

10.0 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS BEFORE STARTING
 Use a voltage stabilizer for control panel (if there is continuous supply voltage fluctuation). The
stabilizer rating can be decided from the Technical specification chapter.
 For 3φ panels connect neutral properly & check the same all O.K. on the control panel before
switching ON the MCB as without neutral the AC drive will get short & become unusable.
 Connect the provided flexible silicon tube for cooling of gland / magnetic drive / digital pressure
sensor or internal cooling coil (only if you have not opted for auto-cooling system) from the water
source. Water at room temperature can be circulated from any source without any pressure. The
cooling should always be turned on whenever autoclave is in use or at higher temperature.
 Ensure the direction of rotation of motor, clockwise from top side of the motor.
 The area of operation should be well ventilated. atmospheric temperature should be range within
22°c to 35°c
 A continuous watch should be kept on reactions which are (i) Exothermic (ii) Involving highly
reactive compounds such as Acetylene, Ethylene Oxide, Oxygen etc. (iii) dealing in flammable gases.
If found necessary, concrete/steel barricades should be built around the apparatus.
 Chemicals of corrosive nature with material of construction of autoclave should not be used in this
apparatus.
 Don’t put any flammable goods near Autoclave reaction going on autoclave. Put fire extinguisher on
ready to use condition.
 The direction of the rupture disc / pressure safety valve elbow / solenoid valve if provided should
always be against the operator & preferably a hose pipe can be connected to the elbow & taken to a
safer place for safety against any rupture due to high pressure.
 Ensure the motor coupled with magnetic drive properly & motor handle should be tighten while
running the motor.
 Ensure the temperature sensor inserted into thermowoll properly or not.
 Ensure Autoclave clamp should tighted properly with vessel and head assembly.
 Conduct pressure test once before start reaction in autoclave. It avoids leakage problem during the
reaction in autoclave.
 Please ensure polarity of the input supply. That shows polarity indicator on control panel.

11.1 SETTING UP THE AUTOCLAVE FOR USE:

Only trained skilled and qualified people shall operate and maintain the machine.

Study the safety as well as operating instructions carefully before starting the machine.
Do not start the machine unless you are well acquainted with the operating parts. Ensure that
all the systems of the machine are properly connected. If all the systems found smoothly
working, run the machine for some time without any load.

The Laboratory Autoclave consists of three operations

 Charging.
 Mixing.
 Discharging.

i) Charging the Material

11.1.1 OPENING THE AUTOCLAVE FOR CHARGING / DIS-CHARGING / CLEANING:

The apparatus is in assembled condition. To open the autoclave first opens the vent
valve to release the internal pressure if any.

1) Slide the bush coupler with one hand simultaneously with other hand loosen the lock (near the
motor mounting plate) & swing the whole motor assembly around the stand so that it comes
out of the way for lifting the autoclave head vertically.

2) Loose the clamp bolts in criss cross fashion with spanner provided.

Page : 38 of 64 LABORATORY AUTOCLAVE

3) Loose the clamp towards opposite direction of the operator.

4) Remove the clamp from the head.

5) Lift up the Head Assembly from the vessel and mount the head assembly on the head rest on
the left hand side of the machine.

6) Remove the vessel from the heater shell.

Page : 39 of 64 LABORATORY AUTOCLAVE

7) Add raw material in the vessel for the operation.

 NOTE: Material can be charged through Powder Inlet Port if provided

Fixed head with body(vessel) raising & lowering arrangement( in hanle lift assembly) :-
In this system the head is fixed & the vessel is raised & lowered. It is useful when there
are many fittings on the head which need not be removed to charge & discharge the vessel. To
remove the vessel first one has to remove the heater by holding the heater handle by one hand
& loosen the knob on the rod(on the left on which the heater slides) by other, the heater can
then slide down slowly & should be turned on the left to come out of the way of the vessel.
Now the vessel stand on the right should be raised with the hand (by loosing the knob with
other hand) until the slot in the stand fixed tightly on the O/D of the vessel from bottom.
Tighten the knob. Whenever the autoclave is to be opened or vessel is to be discharged loosen
the clamp bolts in criss cross fashion with spanner provided & then unlock the latches. Remove
the tow half sections of body clamp from the top, then vessel shall rest raising & lowering
stand. Now hold the stand with one hand the knob can be loosed again with the other hand &
the stand can be lowered & turned to right to remove the vessel for charging / discharging.
Now hold the vessel with one hand & unlock the stand by handle from rod & move the stand
from bottom fixed head & discharged the vessel. Follow the same procedure to fixed the vessel
/ interchange the vessel.

Fixed head with body(vessel) raising & lowering arrangement(in hydraulic lifter assembly) :-
In this system the head is fixed & the vessel is raised & lowered. It is useful when there
are many fittings on the head which need not be removed to charge & discharge the vessel. To
open the vessel from head first hydraulic assembly to be placed bottom side of the vessel and
give hydraulic pressure stroke uniformly still hydraulic base plate touch bottom side of the
vessel. Then release pressure if any found into reactor and remove body camp pair by loosen
clam bolts. Release hydraulic pressure uniformly & slowly still vessel come down from reactor.
Now vessel will removed from reactor.
Caution:
 Hydraulic lifter assembly must stand on equal surface.
 Give uniform stroke while lift vessel & release hydraulic pressure uniformly while
remove vessel from reactor.

11.1.2 CLOSING THE AUTOCLAVE FOR OPERATION:

First examine whether all fittings and body Teflon gasket are in good condition and
correct position. If body Teflon gasket has extruded into a thin edge around the inside and
outside diameters, remove the extruded portion with a sharp knife. Tighten the clamp bolts in a
criss-cross pattern. Put autoclave head on vessel. Pressure inlet and pressure gauge position
should be front side direction of the autoclave & cooling coil, and thermo well should be
backside. Then lock clamp latch tight clamp bolt properly.
Caution:
 Don’t exceed specified torque of the clamp bolts & don’t use any adjustable or heavy
duty spanner to tight bolts. Use proper size spanner only has given to tight bolts. Please
refer following order of diagram

1) Remove all chemical solutions from vessel

2) Put vessel in heater plate

11.1.3 PRESSURISING THE AUTOCLAVE FROM GAS CYLINDER WITH GAS PRESSURE REGULATOR:
A pressure regulator & a high-pressure hose pipe with NRV (optional accessories) are
needed to draw the gas from the cylinder to the autoclave. Check if all valves are closed
properly & connect the gas hose pipe with the NRV & Quick Release Coupling to the gas inlet
sparger valve (Any one of the two valves connected to common dip tube). The other valve can
be used for sampling. Always make sure that the cylinder gas pressure is more than the
autoclave pressure to avoid autoclave chemicals from flowing into the cylinder, as it may create
serious problems. Gas pressure regulator handle should be in totally unscrewed position
initially. For charging first open the gas cylinder valve keeping the gas inlet valve on autoclave
closed & pressurize the gas line by rotating the regulator handle clockwise thus releasing the
gas from the cylinder. As soon as the pressure gauge reading of hose pipe output line on
regulator goes above the autoclave inside pressure, open the gas inlet valve & charge the gas to
achieve the desired pressure in autoclave & then close the inlet valve very tightly. Now
disengage the pressure hose pipe if continuous gas charging is not received. The regulator
supplied is with threading for H2 cylinder. The same can be used with a separate adaptor
supplied for O2 & N2 gases.
Caution:
 Use non return valve while pressurize into reactor. It avoids back pressure during
pressurize reactor.

11.1.4 RELEASING THE GAS:

To release the gas during the reaction or at the end of the reaction, always vent valve
must be used. Rotate vent valve knob anticlockwise direction and Release pressure uniformly &
slowly during pressure release from reactor.
Caution:
 Never open the liquid sampling valve or gas inlet valve for this purpose as otherwise the
liquid inside the autoclave would come out.

11.1.5 WITHDRAWING LIQUID SAMPLES:

 From Sampling Valve:

Liquid samples may be withdrawn from the liquid sampling valve (refer nozzle
orientation plan to locate the desired valve / nozzle). Whenever the vessel is pressurized,
always close the gas inlet valve before withdrawing liquid. Liquid sample will be discharged with
considerable pressure. 90% of the inside liquid can be withdrawn if the autoclave is under
pressure or pressure is applied through vent valve. Always keep clean after withdrawn sample
from autoclave. It avoids any choke up into sparger tube and sampler valve & its nozzle.

 From Flush Bottom Valve (FBV) (Optional Attachment):

A flush bottom valve shall be provided (if opted) for complete discharge of liquid from
the autoclave from bottom. FBV can also be used as a sampling port during the reaction.
Caution:
 Keep clean after usage flush bottom valve & it should be fully closed condition.
 Don’t over tight flush bottom valve & needle valve

Page : 43 of 64 LABORATORY AUTOCLAVE

11.1.6 Setting temperature & run the motor:
After closed autoclave head properly with vessel charge all load plug (heater. Cooling,
motor, temperature sensor, pressure sensor & MFC (if opted)) on these points respectively.
Charge main power supply in control panel. If polarity shows all ok then power control panel.
Switch on motor and increase motor speed uniformly. Then Set required reaction temperature
on controller. Switch on heaters s provided cooling provided on reactor.
Caution:
 Before on the electrical system motor and heater and control panel must be earthed
with ground properly. Never start motor drive at maximum rpm.

1) Switch on the MCB first to start control panel. Before start main MCB ensure polarity
indicator status. It should shows All ok. If any problem found coreect supply input power side.

Main supply MCB

2) Switch on the Heater ON/OFF switch towards On position. The heater in the machine
starts heating the chemical inside the vessel.

ii) Mixing the Material

Switch on the Panel RPM button towards up position. By switching on the Panel RPM
button towards up position the motor in the Autoclave along with the shaft and the impeller
starts rotating, which enables to mix the liquid.

Page : 44 of 64 LABORATORY AUTOCLAVE

iii) Discharging the Material

1. Rotate the sampling valve anticlockwise to discharge the sample for testing.
Note: If the sample tested is OK discharge the sample from the vessel. Discharging details are
mentioned in the next page. Ensure that the Autoclave is stopped completely before
discharging.

2. Switch off the Heater switch on the control panel. By Switching off the Heater switch the heater
in the machine stops functioning.

3. Switch off the Panel RPM button on the control panel. By switching off the Panel RPM button
the motor in the Autoclave along with the shaft and the impeller stops rotating (Working).
