in your community. Compose a two-three paragraphs commentary describing the art
work. Consider the given questions below.

4. What is the subject, topic or theme of the art work?
5. What makes the artwork significant?
6. What can you say about the artist artwork?

“CRACK IN THE HULL”

One of the most popular contemporary art in the Philippines is the artwork titled
“Crack in the Hull” made in 2001 by Ronald Ventura. This 226cm x 1472cm, oil on
canvas art is a mixed media where it depicts two nude people riding in a boat coursing
through a red lagoon. The subject matter that is depicted in the painting is similar to the
carving of the manunggul jar. It is related to the Southeast Asian depiction of “spirit
boats” wherein a deceased person reaches the spirit world after crossing a river.
Here, there are two people riding the boat, the one at the back is the “sundo” or
the one who delivers a deceased soul to the spirit world. The other one who sits in the
front is the deceased who that time is unaware of what is happening around him. The
boat that they are riding is red and brown tint to it with holes and cracks across all over
the place as if making the hull vanishing. The red inside of the boat as if blood was
sprayed all over the place making it having grotesque and gory feel to it. The sunset
was painted at the back means the end of the day. Winds blowing in the opposite
direction as seen from the hair blowing to the left means that there is still more coming
to the horizon. Mr. Ventura did a great job in depicting all these concepts in just one
artwork.Overall, the theme of this artwork is spirituality.

May 19-24 is the anniversary celebration of the establishment of the civil

government of Nueva Vizcaya highlighted by an agro-industrial trade fair, street
parades, float competition, cultural presentations by indigenous groups participated by
the 15 towns of the province and others activities. It is called Grand Ammungan
Festival.
Ammungan is the Gaddang word for “gathering,” while its Ilocano counterpart is
ummungan, which alsohas the same meaning and is widely understood among the
ethnolinguistic groups. The term ‘Ammungan’(gathering) was popularized in 1989 and
1996 to showcase the culture of indigenous people in Nueva Vizcaya. In 2009, the
grand festival paved the way to the birth of Tribu-Biscayano-conglomeration of the
different indigenous peoples in the province. The week-long celebration is a memorable
non-working holiday in the region. It also marked the foundation day of the area
following the royal decree of Spain.
To celebrate this festive event, Novo- Vizcayanos showcase their talents and
creativity through dances, singing and competitions that the Provincial Government
held. Streets are covered with street parade participants wearing artistically and
colorfully made garments and costumes inspired by traditional ethnic attires. Floats
feature the products that the product have. Traditional dances and programs are also
held which are attended by thousands of Vizcayanos.
These arts and performances during the Ammungan Festival significantly
represent the province’s vast culture, tradition and abundance. Therefore, it is really
important that festivals like this are celebrated and continued to generations to preserve
culture and traditions.

ACTIVITY IV: DIGGING DEEP

Directions:” EXPLAINING ARTISTS’ ROLES”. Below are some of the
contemporary
arts from the Philippines. Explain how these arts reflect the artists’ role in the society
by filling-in the space provided for each item.

The completely nude figure of a young man with

outstretched arms and open hands, with tilted
head, closed eyes and parted lips murmuring a
prayer, with breast forward in the act of offering
himself, is my interpretation of that sublime
stanza. It symbolizes all the unknown heroes who
fell during the night. The statue stands on a rustic
base, a stylized rugged shape of the Philippine
archipelago, lined with big and small rocks, each
and every one of which represents and island.
Katakataka is really a wonder plant. It is called
siempre vivo (always alive) in Spanish. A leaf or a
piece thrown anywhere will sprout into a young
plant. Hence it symbolizes the deep-rooted
patriotism in the heart of our heroes. Such
patriotism continually and forever grows
anywhere in the Philippines. The 3.5-meter height
of the statue stands for the 350 years of Spanish
rule in the Philippines. The rocks on the base of
the relic were taken from Montalban (Rizal)
gorge, site of the fierce fighting between Filipino
guerillas and the Japanese army during the
Second World War.
Planting Rice painted by Fernando Amorsolo. It reflects the arrival of the Americansin
the Philippines and the idealism of the artist to the Philippine society. The
paintingreflected the people’s desire to escape from a complicated reality into
simplicity (Stancheva,2017). Amorsolo was committed to two fundamental ideas in his
art: first, a classical notionof idealism, in which artistic truth was found through
harmony, balance and beauty, andsecond a conservative concept of Filipino national
character as rooted in rural communitiesand the cycles of village life. The two come
together in pastoral scenes of the painting.Planting Rice portrayed happy Filipino
villagers in their bright clothes and straw hats worktogether. Behind them, releasing a
peaceful plume of steam, rises the beautifullysymmetrical cone of MayonVolcano.
The relationship between the volcano and thesurrounding landscape is depicted as a
positive, fruitful and harmonious one since it is theash erupted by the volcano over its
highly-active historythat has made the surroundinglandscape fertile, and the tranquil
cone appears here to be a beneficial spirit of the earthstanding guardian over the
villagers and their crops (The Volcanism, 2009).
Slice of Life is a reflection of the many unique aspects of everyday life in the
Philippines. He captured the interest of his weekend patrons by giving them the task
of looking for his image cleverly concealed within the weekend cartoon. He did the
same with his other comic strip Kalabog and Bosyo. His cartoons had been tapped in
advertising campaigns, such as corporate calendars, print ads, promotional T-shirts
and in San Miguel Beer cans. In 1988, his Slice of Life received the Best in Humor
award and was also cited for helping to keep alive the Filipino's ability to laugh at
himself, through the lively marriage of art and humor, and through commentaries that
are at once critical and compassionate, evoking laughter and reflection. Slice of Life
appeared on the pages of the Weekend Magazine.
the masterpiece of Vicente Manansala entitled “Mother and Child” is a painting in
cubism style created in 1965. It portrays a woman sitting on the floor and holding the
child. At the upper right corner is a vase and an upside-down red cup. The woman is
wearing a black dress which is in old style. Her black hair is unruly. The painting
shows a realistic scene with a contrast of dark and light colors. The background is
whitish gray and the central image is black and somewhat light brown. The vase and
the upside-down red cup signifies the Filipino environment that depicts poverty, chaos
and discomfort that one has felt. The mother watches after the child and the child’s
face is covered by the mother, it means that the mother protects the child against the
harshness of life.
Virgilio Almario has presented the metaphor of the narrative of Ibong Adarna to
symbolize the life cycle of Philippine literature as something that possess the
same vulnerability as the Princes of Albania– Pedro, Diego, and Juan, under
the charm and jeopardy of the Ibong Adarna.

widely shared. HYBRIDITY

ACTIVITY IV. Spot the Element/Principle.

The following photos demonstrate the different principles or elements of

contemporary art. Identify what principle or element is visually shown and
briefly evaluate its effect to the artwork.

1. Appropriation is where artists deliberately

copy images and use them in their art.
Appropriation artists wanted the viewer to
easily recognize the image and associate it to
the new context. In the artwork, Mona Lisa
was copied and recognized but peculiarly,
she looks distorted and fat.

2.Hybridity is usage of unconventional

materials or mixing unlikely materials to
produce an art work. For example, blood for
painting and
syringe for sculpture as seen in the artwork
on the left.

3.Space refers to a feeling of depth or three

dimensions. It can also refer to the artists’
use of the area within the picture plane. The
area around the primary objects in a work of
art is known as negative space, while the
space occupied by the primary objects is
known as positive space as shown on the
left.

Bruno Catalano`s Missing Pieces

4. Performance is the living artist art.
It challenges the conventional way of
art such as sculpture and painting. It
is also called the dematerialization of
the art object where man can
physically become the direct subject
of an art through interpretation.

5.Technology is use of modern

platform or equipment in creating an
art. This includes recording, live
streaming, 3D printing or any art from
internet or digital technology.

ACTIVITY V. My Art, My Voice.

Create an art that promotes the different measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Be sure to incorporate at least one principle or element of contemporary art. You can
utilize any contemporary art form previously presented.

Guide Question:
How does a principle/element affect the visual imagery of an art?
(I used Appropriation in my art. As you can see, I deliberately copied Duterte’s feature in
my cartooning and used him as my main idea. I portrayed him carrying two boulders
while balancing the rope. In this Editorial Cartoon I want to deliver a message that
during this time of pandemic, our government is really struggling to balance the
economy and health.)

As seen in my artwork, the principles and elements of an art is very important to be able
to portray my ideas and thoughts. Using the elements and principles of art, I was able to
make my artwork more aesthetic, portray movements, and visual imagery. Therefore,
elements and principles of art are indeed important to be able to make an art pleasing
to the eyes.

QUARTER 2
WEEK 1

What I Know

Compare and Contrast

Study the different types of houses below then answer the given questions.
1. How do the following houses differ from each other?

Basing from the picture, the houses differ from

structure, design and materials. The first house was a
bahay kubo which is basically fabricated with the ever
dependable bamboo banded together with strings with
cogon grass or dried coconut leaves. Walls are made of nippa leaves and
bamboo slats and the floor was made of finely split resilient bamboo. The next
house is an Ivatan houses which are made of metre-thick limestone and coral
walls as well as cogon grass roofs, and they are sturdy enough to withstand
strong winds. These houses are famous in Batanes. The last house was
basically a modern house which is obviously made from concrete.

2. Why do the structures of the three houses differ from each other?

Bahay kubo is an archetype of an energy-efficient structure built from natural,

renewable materials such as bamboo and nipa, its sloping roofs are good
insulators of heat, and its openings are convenient for air circulation. Meanwhile,
the Ivatan houses are not the typical houses you can find in the Philippines. The
Ivatan people, an ethnolinguistic group of the Batanes province in the
northernmost part of the country, built the now-famous stone houses for a very
good reason: to protect them against the harsh environmental condition. On the
other hand, Modern/Concrete house construction provides homeowners with
many benefits, including energy-efficiency, durability, and low-maintenance. Also,
concrete homes create a safe, comfortable, and healthy environment, along with
contributing positively to the environment.

WEEK 2

What I Know
Study and analyze the two pictures by answering the guide questions.
Guide Questions:
1. What materials was used in each artwork?
The first image is a wood carving that is a form of woodworking by means of a
cutting tool in one hand or a chisel by two hands or with one hand on a chisel
and one hand on a mallet, resulting in a wooden figure or figurine, or in the
sculptural ornamentation of a wooden object. On the other hand, the horse
figurine is considered a metal sculpture. The metal most used for sculpture is
bronze, which is basically an alloy of copper and tin; but gold, silver,
aluminum, copper, brass, lead, and iron have also been widely used.
2. Describe how the artwork was made.
Wood carving is a form of woodworking by means of a cutting tool (knife) in
one hand or a chisel by two hands or with one hand on a chisel and one hand
on a mallet, resulting in a wooden figure or figurine, or in the sculptural
ornamentation of a wooden object. Meanwhile, a bronze sculpture, often
simply called ‘a bronze’, is a three-dimensional piece of art made by pouring
molten bronze into a mold, before leaving it to solidify. Bronze sculpture is
made via a process known as casting: pouring molten metal into a mould and
leaving it to solidify.

in a unique way to make artwork is one of the most important movements that

more valuable than we think that they are. Everything you find can be used to tell a
story, or to create new diverse perspectives that we are looking for when we attend
an art exhibition.
 LARGESCALE- reating something huge to express diverse perspectives in artwork
