BSED-Science 2D Art Appreciation
MODULE 1
I. LET’S GET STARTED
As a preliminary activity for the topic, answer the following questions in just two sentences:

1. What is Art Appreciation?

 The ability to view art throughout history, focusing on cultures and people, as well as
how art developed during specific periods, is essential for art appreciation. Art
appreciation uses methods and materials to analyze art, allowing people to make
connections between the context of art and societal interactions.

2. How do you determine whether a particular art is an original work of an artist?

 There are several ways to determine the authenticity of a work of art. Checking for
the artist's original signature with a magnifying glass to identify the texture, surface,
and even scent is one of these methods.

3. Does art always have a purpose and a function? If it ceased its function, would it
still be considered as art?

 All things in this world have a purpose or a function, which means that art, by
definition, has functions. However, when an artwork is no longer considered an art
form, it no longer serves a purpose.

II. LET’S DO IT
Look around your house and identify a product of art. In the box below, paste a picture of art
in your household. Trace the beginnings of this item and identify what purpose and functions
it has played in history (e.g. a painting of the Last Supper in your dining room or a spoon).

The earliest mentions of the spoon in England can be

dated back to 1259 where King Edward I's wardrobe
accounts make mention of spoons. Not only were spoons
used as eating utensils during that time, but much like
Ancient Egypt, spoons carried significance in ceremonies
as a sign of wealth and power. A spoon is a utensil
consisting of a small shallow bowl (also known as a
head), oval or round, at the end of a handle. A type of
cutlery (sometimes called flatware in the United States),
especially as part of a place setting, it is used primarily
for transferring food to the mouth.

IV. POST TEST

In just 3-5 sentences, briefly answer the following questions:

1. What is the importance of Humanities as a science of art?

 Humanities and arts have always been central to all human cultures throughout
history. Their research can help to foster deeper intercultural understanding and lay
the groundwork for a civically engaged life. They can also help you prepare to think
critically, act creatively, and succeed in a rapidly changing world. Humanities are the
stories, ideas, and words that help us make sense of our lives and the world we live
in, which is centered on science. The humanities help us decide what is important in
our own lives and what we can do to improve them by demonstrating how others
have lived and thought about life.

2. How is a work of art produced by an artist? Discuss the process of production.

 Artists create works of art to express their ideas, thoughts, or feelings. Craft artists
create or reproduce handmade objects for sale or exhibition. Fine artists are those
who create original artwork using a variety of media and techniques, such as
painters, sculptors, and illustrators. Every work of art is created in four stages:
preparation, incubation, inspiration, and elaboration; the stages may not occur in the
same order, but all four occur during the process.

3. Which of the following classification of art (Visual, Performing, Literary) do you

think you belong? Why?

 For me, and based on my own abilities, I believe I belong in the world of Performing
and Creating Visual Arts, because I was a student of some organization that
performs musical theatre at the time, and on the other hand, I am a visual artist who
enjoys drawing and painting.

4. Why is art also called ―High Culture?

 It is considered as a High culture because it encompasses the cultural objects of

aesthetic value, which a society collectively esteem as exemplary art, and the
intellectual works of philosophy, history, art and literature that a society consider
representative of their culture.

MODULE 2
TOPIC: AESTHETIC ARTS AND CRAFTS

LET’S GET STARTED!

Answer the following questions briefly:

1. What do you think is the relationship between Art and Crafts?

 Although art and craft may sound similar, there is a significant distinction between the
two. Both are wonderful and innovative contributions that an individual can provide to
the world. Craft, on the other hand, is the physical outcome of ability and talent,
whereas art is the distinctive expression of feelings that are more personalized.

2. Is Art a reflection of our values? Support your answer.

 Yes, because it reflects our ever-changing culture and has the power to change
society's values. Furthermore, art adds meaning to people's lives and contributes to
the preservation of the world's culture and societies. It is a manifestation of society
and a reflection of people's complex identities.

3. Is artistic skill learned or natural?

 Natural skills are acquired through practice; artistry, on the other hand, is innate. In
the realm of the arts, skills are the means by which one creates art. They aren't
works of art in and of themselves.

4. What do you think are the needed materials in creating a functional work of art?

 The importance of materials is one of the most fundamental and practical

components of art. Artists' materials have an impact on both the shape and content
of their work. Every medium contributes something unique to the creative process
and the final product. Materials have an impact on how artists create their work as
well as how viewers interpret it. However, when you have an artistic mind inside you,
anything can be a tool in my perception.

LET’S DO IT!
Take a picture of any painting done by a Filipino artist (you may copy from the internet).
Explain what that art is all about. Discuss its artistic design and composition.\

SPOLIARIUM
Artist: Juan Luna (1884)

Revolving around gladiator matches, Juan Luna’s oil on canvas painting

Spoliarium features a glimpse into the history of Rome and the bloody consequences of
these matches. The painting depicts dying gladiators who are being dragged by Roman
soldiers. The name of the painting ‘Spoliarium’ is a Latin word which refers to the area in the
Roman Colosseum which was used to dump the bodies of fallen gladiators. Luna portrayed
a contrast between the two sides of the painting: the left is shown with people spectators
who are eagerly waiting for the fights and on the right are the people who are mourning the
death of a fallen gladiator. It is the largest painting in the Philippines and is displayed at the
National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila, Philippines. Juan Luna won his first gold medal for

 Prehistoric people and their traditions
 Cave alphabet or symbols

Animals were extremely important to prehistoric people because they were their primary
source of food, by hunting. Oxen, donkeys, and horses were used as draft animals, while
goats and sheep were tamed and raised for food. They also document their way of life and
traditions in the cave for future generations to see and learn about. The people who created

POST-TEST
Answer the following questions.
1. How do you describe art as a cultural document?
 Art is recognized as a form of human self-expression. It draws inspiration from a
variety of sources, including religious belief systems, ethnicity and origin, and a
variety of other, often personal, sources. Not all forms of self-expression are artistic.
The designation is heavily influenced by agreement and appreciation of the results,
as well as the artist's intention. For those reasons, it is a very broad definition. While
some art focuses on culture, others focus on human emotion, aspiration, and
diversity. The ease with which much of it can be shared across cultural boundaries
serves as a reminder of our common humanity.

2. In your own opinion, what are the purposes of art during ancient time in Europe?
 The importance and accomplishments of humans were emphasized in ancient Greek
art. Despite the fact that much Greek art was created to honor the gods, those gods
were created in the image of humans. Much of the artwork was sponsored by the
government and was intended for public display.

3. Why was ancient arts mostly found in caves? What are their significant values?
 Cave painting was the people's version of documentation in the past. Cave art is
significant because it was used by prehistoric people to record history and culture.
However, prehistoric cave art was also significant because it served as a warning to
those who came later.

4. What is the importance of stone during Paleolithic period? Explain.

 During this time, humans used stone to make tools, and stone was frequently used
as part of the tool itself. Tools are objects that help us live our lives more comfortably.

5. What art legacy do you like most during ancient Europe? Explain.
 Great artists introduced the advancement of arts during the middle periods, just as
they did in ancient Europe. During this period, artists broke away from the Byzantium
art style and evolved into Gothic visual art. The painters and sculptors of the Middle
Ages were the forefathers of the movement toward greater realism, which culminated
in the Renaissance art style.
