3. AIRCRAFT OVERVIEW
3.1 C-17 Introduction
“The McDonnell Douglas/Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is a large military transport
aircraft that was developed for the United States Air Force (USAF) from the 1980s to
the early 1990s by McDonnell Douglas. The C-17 carries forward the name of two
previous piston-engined military cargo aircraft, the Douglas C-74 Globemaster and the
Douglas C-124 Globemaster II. The C-17 commonly performs tactical and strategic
airlift missions, transporting troops and cargo throughout the world; additional roles
include medical evacuation and airdrop duties. It was designed to replace the Lockheed
C-141 Starlifter, and also fulfill some of the duties of the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy.
The C-17 is powered by four Pratt & Whitney F117-PW-100 turbofan engines, which are
based on the commercial Pratt and Whitney PW2040 used on the Boeing 757. Each
engine is rated at 40,400 lbf (180 kN) of thrust. The engine's thrust reversers direct
engine exhaust air upwards and forward, reducing the chances of foreign object
damage by ingestion of runway debris, and providing enough reverse thrust to back up
the aircraft while taxiing. The thrust reversers can also be used in flight at idle-reverse
for added drag in maximum-rate descents.”

3.1.1 Performance
The design of the aircraft (high-lift wing, slats, and externally blown flaps) allows it to
operate through small, austere airfields. The C-17 can take off and land on runways as
short as 3,500 feet (1,064 meters) and only 90 feet wide (27.4 meters).
With it’s advanced flight control system, the C-17 is incredibly manurable, and is a sight
to behold in low-level areas.

4. FLIGHT PROCEDURES
4.1 Engine Start-up
We are still working on start-up procedures for the moment.
1) External Power- Connected
2) Battery Switch- ON
3) Beacon Lights- ON
4) Surrounding area of aircraft- CLEAR
5) Engine Ignition- CLICK
a. Wait for spool-up, check status with engine display
6) In order to comply with safety requirements, ensure that at least one display has
the PFD open.
7) HUD- Open
a. Brightness- Adjust to environment
4.2 Taxi
1) Landing lights- ON
2) Landing light position- EXTEND
3) Control surfaces- CHECKED
a. Use CFG page on PFD
4) Obstacles around aircraft- CHECKED
5) Taxi clearance- ISSUED
6) Parking brake- RELEASED
4.3 Takeoff
The C-17 is capable of high performance takeoffs to quickly escape from potential
warzone threats.
6) At V2/Rotate velocity tilt nose to a 10 degree angle. Maintain heading until clear
of runway
7) Raise landing gear
4.4 Climb
1) After passing 10 thousand:
a. Landing lights- OFF
b. Landing lights position- RETRACT
2) If using autopilot:
a. Flight Director- ON
b. Altitude hold- ON
i. Adjust selected altitude to desired height
c. LNav/Heading hold- ON
i. Bank limit (If needed)- Selected
d. Auto-throttle- ON
i. Auto throttle speed select- ON
ii. Adjust to selected speed
3) Anti-ice systems (If needed)
4.6 Descent
The C-17 is capable of impressive descents using it’s in-air reversers. We have
simulated this feature on our aircraft.
4.7 Landing
Using its externally blown flaps, the C17 can slow to impressive speeds allowing it to
land in miniscule runways for its size.
a. If carrying more than 165,000 pounds of total fuel, delay braking until nose
gear touchdown
5) When within 1nm, open the AR door by clicking the green button located on the
overhead, at the top of the fuel control panel.
5. OTHER INFORMATION
5.1 Sim restrictions
The performance of the C-17 Globemaster presents a variety of challenges to any
developer. The performance of this aircraft is unique because of its externally blown
flaps, electronic flight controls, and in-air reverser capabilities. Through dozens of hours
of work, we have crafted what we believe is the most accurate C-17 flight model created
for a flight simulator, though there still are some indiscrepancies that we simply cannot
simulate as intended in this environment, some of which are listed below.
Spoilers:
The C-17 has a sophisticated system that automates the use of speed brakes. Pilots of
the aircraft can use it for low-level maneuvering, adjusting descent rate, and much
more. Unfortunately the sim restricts much of what we need to properly simulate it, so
we have resorted to simple on/off control of the aircraft. We have enabled auto spoilers,
however that is just a taste of the many functions they have.
5.2 TROUBLESHOOTING
Please refer to the #c-17 faq channel on my discord for the latest troubleshooting help.

5.5 Donations
Donations are always appreciated as they help subsidize the cost of development.
Donors help finance the applications required to realize our goals for the C-17, and so
are highly influential to our success. If you donate to this project, rest assured that it will
make a difference, no matter the size. Donators get special access to behind-the-
