MS Molecular Biology Statement of Purpose

Who would have imagined that a Platypus, a 24-inch-long mammal, would assist me in determining; what to
invest my skillsets in while making academic decisions for my future endeavours? My undergraduate studies in
biotechnology astonished me with the complexity of biological networks, even at the cellular level; even cells
receive, send, interpret, and misinterpret messages. It only takes a slight deviation from these messages for a
complex physiological response to occur. As a result, I set myself to understand the structure, function, and
interactions among genes, proteins, and other macromolecules necessary for living. Throughout my academic
career, I had the opportunity to comprehend different facets of molecular biology, such as cell culture,
identification of microorganisms through staining methods, PCR, SDS-PAGE, DNA extraction from cells, and
Western Blotting.

My interest in molecular biology grew over time as I had the opportunity to learn about various concepts in this
field through diverse courses and workshops. I wanted to gain international exposure in this field, and Coursera
courses like "Introduction to Genomic Technologies" from Johns Hopkins University and "The Science of Stem
Cells" from the American Museum of Natural History helped me achieve that. These experiences, along with the
ones I gained while serving on the organizing committee for the college's biotechnology department, equipped
me with the skills to organize a national level symposium and hands-on training workshop on "Mass cultivation
of microalgae for the production of biofuels." It was at this symposium that I presented the extraction of
antimicrobial protein from the milk of platypus, as it has been shown that the milk of this mammal has
antibacterial properties due to the presence of a unique Shirley protein. My thesis work is based on extraction of
phytochemicals from various leaves to form Polyherbal Hand Sanitizer. These encounters further fuelled my
desire to seek a Master's degree in molecular biology.

Any pursuit of knowledge is meaningless without practical exposure to real-world situations. Considering this, I
am fortunate enough to have assisted as a research and development intern in the clinical, biochemical assay at
Cancer institute. Furthermore, during my final year, I interned at MagGenome, a firm specializing in testing and
developing DNA and RNA extraction kits. In light of the current pandemic situation, they have begun creating
COVID-19 diagnostic kits that use a magnetic nanotechnology-based extraction approach. After completing
internship, I was recruited as a project trainee in the same organization in the production unit. Working in this
subject further sparked my interest in this field and piqued my curiosity about what else could be studied at the
cellular level.

The increased opportunities in my chosen area of interest led me to take a leap in my career and bridge the gap
between my existing knowledge and the proposed one. Thus, I have decided to pursue a master's in Molecular
Biology from KU Leuven University, Belgium. Among the reasons I want to study at KU Leuven University are
not only the fact that it is a highly acclaimed university dedicated to life science, but also its core facilities KU
Leuven Genomics Core Facility, KU Leuven Cell and Tissue Imaging Cluster Core Facility. Collaborations such
as these will be beneficial to me not only during my master's program but also as a researcher in the future.

In addition, studying in Belgium will offer me a competitive edge in my career. The teaching methodology is
application-oriented, and the students can learn through projects and research. Upon completion of the program, I
plan to pursue an applied research career in molecular biology followed by a Ph.D.

I hope you find my purpose to fit your image of a promising student. I hope to inspire diligence and be an asset to
your institute.
