2. Explain the importance of Assessment in Teaching Reading and Feed backing

in Assessing Reading. Discuss specifically the distinction of the two.

Teaching reading is a difficult task as it involves comprehension and fluency. And in

order to teach it properly, one must know how to assess the capability of his/her
students. Assessment in teaching reading is as important as feedbacking in
assessing reading. The former involves the participation of learners and be engaged
in the activities given. This not only helps the students to track their progress, but
also help the teachers and educators in improving their skills and capabilities.
Likewise, assessment in teaching reading creates a venue for the students and
teachers to understand their needs and strengths in reading through activities
appropriate to their level.
On the other hand, the latter informs the learners their progress. Feedbacking is a
vital part in assessment as it shows the students their progress – what they did right
and what needs to be corrected; from tracking their progress to actually
understanding it and knowing where they are at the moment. Consequently,
effective feedback must be done as it showcases success and development in the
part of the students.

3. Name at least three Reading Techniques and Strategies and discuss how to
conduct these in a real life (face to face) situation in the classroom.

In teaching reading, the use of different techniques and strategies is helpful in

engaging the students to participate and develop their comprehension skills. The
following are three reading techniques and strategies that can be used as activities
in the classroom.

1. Scanning. This reading technique involves reading a text quickly to find

specific information about a topic being discussed. This can be done in the
classroom using textbooks or handouts given to the students and let them
search certain information about the lesson of the day. The students may use
highlighters and their hands to locate the information. Also, it is important to
remember that the texts given should be appropriate for the learners to
achieve successful comprehension.

2. KWL Chart. This is graphic organizer that will help the students in activating
prior knowledge and as well as organize information from the text they are
reading. KWL stands for Know, Want, and Learn. These three words will act
as columns in a handout given or the students may create their own chart.
The three accompanies the before, during and after of the reading activity.
The students will first fill out the K columns which caters answers on what
they know about the reading activity, then fill in the next column, which asks
about what they want to know, and lastly what they learned from the
activity. At the end of the lesson, the teacher engages the students in a
collaborative discussion to draw out their understanding of the lesson and
correct the misconceptions.

3. Story Maps. This strategy involves stories to be read by the students and
organize their understanding of the text. It involves knowing the specific
parts of the story as it follows a diagram of the details found. The map
involves the understanding of the setting, characters, problem, important
events, and theme of a text in which they would draw out this information
from it. In conducting it in a classroom, it is better to use literary texts that
are not lengthy to provide time for discussions after the activity. The

4. What is the purpose and value of teaching Literature? How to extract SHE in
teaching Literature?

As educators would say, literature is the reflection of human experience. This

stipulates how powerful words are in reliving memories of the past, present, and
future. Hence, the importance of teaching it. Teaching literature is significant as it
allows people to understand the experiences of other people in different times and
places. Its purpose is to educate learners of the writing styles and techniques
authors have in the past and how it changes as time pass by. Likewise, it creates a
venue for learners to foster skills in reading comprehension and to other skills as
well. Likewise, in extracting the significant human experience in teaching literature,
one must understand the themes of life and how literature portray these things in
the texts we read and teach.

5. Discuss dissimilarities of these three. Prose, Poetry and Drama. Write two examples
for each one to support its uniqueness.
The three genres of literature prose, poetry, drama are distinct categories in the
world of literature. Though the three uses words to inform, educate, and entertain,
still the three are different from each other. The following are the differences of the
three.
In terms of presentation, poetry is presented in linear verses, prose is presented in
proper grammar, and drama is presented in linear dialogue.
In the weight of words, poetry follows a metric system of rhythms, prose tends to
have natural conversation, and drama is more dramatic as the name suggests.
Furthermore, structure wise, in poetry, verses are used which consist of lines and
stanzas. This is one of the unique characteristics of poems. Since it tends to have
lines that may or may not follow a natural conversation and has rhythm, for
example, The Road Not Taken and Fire and Ice by Robert Frost.

Some say the world will end in fire,

Some say in ice.
Two roads diverged From what I’ve tasted of desire
in a yellow wood, I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
And sorry I could not I think I know enough of hate
travel both To say that for destruction ice
And be one traveler, Is also great
And would suffice.
long I stood
Prose, on the other hand, follows a structure that is normal in day to day
conversation and writing. It uses proper everyday speech that is easily understood
by people. Examples may include newspapers and articles written to inform the
majority.
Drama, in contrast, is a representation of a script and performance. This tends to be
written in linear, non linear or cyclical progression and it aims to be acted on
theater of television. Famous example are works written by Shakespeare such as
Romeo and Juliet and King Lear.

6. What makes bottom-up, top-bottom and interactive approach distinct from one
another?

The three reading models are different from one another in terms of the way it is
processed and done in the classroom. The top bottom approach focuses on
providing the students the general view of a topic before going to the specific
details, whereas bottom up begins with the specific parts of the lesson. And lastly,
the interactive approach tends to actively involve the students in the discussion
hence the interaction between the teacher and the learners.
