Topic 10. Rehabilitation Programs of the Bureau of Corrections (BUCOR)

Going back to the traditional view of corrections, putting a criminal behind

bars only serves to increase punishment. The welfare and growth of PDLs are
frequently overlooked. Currently, correctional institutions are active in introducing
cutting-edge programs that might aid in the rehabilitation of offenders.
The BUCOR is an agency under the Department of Justice that is charged with
custody and rehabilitation of national offenders. It has a mission of “Effective
safekeeping and rehabilitation of national prisoners.”

To carry out its mandate, the Bureau undertakes the following:

 Confine persons convicted by the courts to serve a sentence in national

prisons.
 Keep prisoners from committing crimes while in custody.
 Provide humane treatment by supplying the inmates' basic needs and
implementing a variety of rehabilitation programs designed to change their
pattern of criminal or anti-social behavior.
 Engage in agro-industrial projects for the purpose of developing prison lands
and resources into productive bases or profit centers, developing and
employing inmate manpower skills and labor, providing prisoners with a source
of income and augmenting the Bureau's yearly appropriations.

BUCOR Rehabilitation Programs: The core objective in the administration of these

circumferential reformation programs is the effective treatment of anti-social
behavior and destructive personality disorders of an inmate.
