PART I:

A. INTRODUCTION

On-The-Job-Training (OJT) means training in the public or private sector

engaging in productive work that provides knowledge and skills essential to the full and

adequate performance on the job.

On-the-job-training (OJT) is one of the best experience and highlights of the

college life of a criminology student. This training could help the trainees to experience

the different demands of their future job. This is a great opportunity for them to apply the

things that they have learned inside the four corners of the classroom. On-the-job-

training also helped them in enhancing their personality, and confidence. It could also

instill to them the value of respect for the law and services to the community.

Before the interns were deployed in selected agencies and the community

immersion, they have experienced a week long intensive paramilitary trainings and

exercises. The series of activities and preparations are designed to prepare the interns

not only physically, but mentally as well for the challenges that they were about to face

in their personal career.

One can therefore postulate that the rationale is to expose the students to actual

real-life work environment, agency/institutional operations and work scenarios; prepare

them for their profession by discovering their own capabilities, strengths and

weaknesses to thereby help them make career decisions; adopt appropriate etiquette in

interacting with supervisors, workmates, and clientele; and, earn actual work-hours

experience to increase their chances for employment opportunities after graduating. In a

nutshell, OJT is a valuable step in transitioning the student from the classroom to a

professional career.

Taking on-the-job training might be challenging. Students must complete the duty

assigned to them by their superiors. The trainee was assigned to several units in order

to improve their job performance skills. One of the most basic needs for improving and

developing a student's productivity is superior student-to-student communication. The

superior must demonstrate and instruct on the required abilities or tasks. They are also

the people in the organization who teach the students the necessary knowledge and

skills. Problems between students and superiors must be avoided in order for them to

have a positive connection and finish all of the required duties. The intern should be

always active in learning new skills whenever the superior is teaching for them to realize

the importance of the job when they are employed.

Students who undergo on-the-job training are very lucky because they are the

ones who usually take pride in learning new skills. They gain to improve their future

employment value and for them to have new capability in their future career, in addition,

by making learning possible, they earn their respect and build enduring relationships

between students and superiors. By identifying the relationship between the student

behavior towards work performance of Criminology interns, the researcher is confident

that future interns will be more competent and skillful as the negative student behavior

would be exposed and become awareness to future Criminology interns.

B. OBJECTIVES

The study will determine the student behavior of Criminology interns of South

East Asian Institute of Technology, Inc. and how it affects the work performance of the

interns:

1. To determine the work performance of Criminology interns on their On-the-Job

training;

2. To identify the behavior of the interns in their On-the-Job Training that affects

their work performance;

3. To determine the significant relationship between the student behavior of

Criminology Interns towards work performance in On-the-Job Training.

PART II:

A. VISION

We, in South East Asian Institute of Technology, Inc. envisions ourselves as

recognized institution of quality education, a leader in promoting and upholding learning

and achieve through a demonstrated and established excellence and a community of

people who contribute to society in many ways.

MISSION

Guided by our vision, we aim to promote individual creativity and intellectual

distinction and produce highly competent professionals through an enriched curriculum,

quality teaching and improved facilities.

B. NARRATION

In traditional On-The-Job Training, interns need to be in different agencies in

order to apply and learn new areas. But because of the pandemic that arose, the OJT

conducted in the school premises. In the training, interns abide by adjustments and

changes in the way it was conducted and follow safety protocols to protect the interns

from the Covid 19 Virus.

The previous type of OJT before the pandemic arose greatly differs from this

year. In the previous, school administrators and Criminology faculty deployed interns to

different agencies such as in Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection

(BFP), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, and many other agencies related to

Criminology. In there, interns learn and adopt their future workplace while working with

professional employees. While in today’s On-The-Job Training that was conducted in

our beloved school, interns assist students upon implementing the safety protocols

against the Covid 19 virus. Interns also do office work as they are assigned to the

Registrar's Office. Different and new fields unlike traditional OJT but learnings and

values that must be inherited were highly observed and taught.

Interns observe during the training that there are big changes upon the

implementation such as in the working environment, workmates, and as well as the

works. It was also observed that upon implementation, there was a lack of materials and

equipment that were used in maintaining the safety protocols. Interns were not

dedicated enough with their responsibilities knowing they knew that they would be

assigned to different agencies. But interns must abide by the decision of the school

administrators since the school really indeed needs our help upon maintaining the

security and protection of the school.

III. FINDINGS

The study was conducted to Criminology interns of South East Asian Institute of

Technology, Inc. to determine the work performance of interns and if there is a

relationship between the students’ behavior and work performance. With that, the

respondents were asked and surveyed whether the personal characteristics and attitude

towards the job listed below affects their work performance and if the mentioned traits

implied by the respondents in the field.

● Personal Characteristics

1. Dresses neatly and appropriately for office work.

2. Has a pleasing personality, cheerful and good humored.

3. Projects self-confidence and enthusiasm.

4. Demonstrate leadership potential.

5. Possesses above average oral and written communication skills.

● Attitudes towards the Job

1. Cooperates willingly and fits easily with the group.

2. Shows interest and pride in his/her tasks.

3. Has an exceptional sense of duty and can be depended upon to do a good job.

4. Recognizes the authority and responsibilities of his/her superiors and provides

support services.

5. Takes initiative to update one’s technical and non-technical knowledge and skills.

In personal characteristics, the respondents rated the following characteristics

based on how it affects their work performance as an intern. The highest rating was ‘has

pleasing personality, cheerful and good humored’; followed by dresses neatly and

appropriately for office work; Possesses above average oral and written communication

skills; Projects self-confidence and enthusiasm; and lastly, demonstrates leadership

potential.

In the attitudes towards the job, the respondents still rated the following attitudes

based on how it affects their work performance as an intern. The highest rating was

cooperates willingly and fits easily with the group; followed by ‘shows interest and pride

in his/her tasks; recognizes the authority and responsibilities of his/her superiors and

provides support services; has an exceptional sense of duty and can be depended upon

to do a good job; and takes initiative to update one’s technical and non-technical

knowledge and skills.

IV. CONCLUSION

Based on the findings presented above, the behavior of the student is

determined based on the personal characteristics and attitudes of the student towards

the job. The behaviors presented were assessed by the respondents whether those

affects their work performance. The findings tells that the student behaviors’ determined

truly affects their work performance as an intern and it was highly observed as their

action during the On-the-Job Training. This could means that the student should be

aware of his/her behavior when on the job training or job itself as it greatly impacts their

work performance and as well as with the ratings of the employer towards them.
V. RECOMMENDATION

For the result of the study to be more meaningful and relevant to the Internship

Program of the College of Criminology, recommendations are forwarded.

The OJT Coordinators should conduct frequent monitoring and evaluation to

student trainees/interns to ensure that the behavior of the interns are highly observed

and practiced to avoid the breakdown to the work performance.

Another recommendation is that prior to the deployment of the interns, seminars

and workshops should be implemented to inform the interns regarding their

responsibilities and to educate them with proper behavior in the workplace.

To the future researchers, may they further study with regards to the topic to

explore more and learn new information as to how it relates with each other and how

these could affect the future interns. And also, to let other people know the significance

of the study.
