The Brief History of

Campus Journalism in
the Philippines
According to Jesus Valenzuela and
John Lent, the Philippines' history of
1890 Campus Journalism began when
University of Santo Tomas published
"El Liliputiense".

Oscar Manalo, Narciso Matienzo, and


Virgilio Monteloyola argued that it
1910 actually began in the publication of
University of the Philippines' "The College
Folio" (a.k.a "The Philippine Collegian").

Publication of Philippine Normal University's


"The Torch", Ateneo de Manila's "The Guidon",

1912
and University of Santo Tomas' "The
Varsitarian", and Araullo High School's "The
Coconut" which is considered the first and
oldest newspaper in the country.

The first printed and regularly issued


high school newspaper in the country,
1923 La Union High School's "The La Union
Tab", was published.

Publication of Pampanga High School's

1925 "The Pampangan" and Leyte High


School's "The Leytean".

Publication of and Rizal High School's


1926 "The Rizalian".

1927 "The Coconut" and Batangas High
School's "The Volcano".

Publication of La Union Trade School's


1928 "The Toil" and Samar High School's "The
Samarinian" .

Publication of Tarlac High School's


1929 "The Melting Pot" and Nueva Ecija High
School's "The Granary".

Publication of Torres High School's


1930 "The Torres Torch".

Publication of Cagayan High School's "The


Cagayan Student Chronicle". Also, by this
1931 time, 30/106 high schools in the Philippines
had a campus newspaper registered at the
Bureau of Public Schools.

By 1950, the number of campus


1950 registered increased to 169.

1954 By this year, it increased to 253.

By 1975, 500 schools were already


1975 registered.

More than 900 newspapers in both


1986 English and Filipino were already
registered.
