What is It

Crocheting is a needlecraft technique using a crochet hook plus yarn/thread or

other similar material. (https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/crochet-definition-what-is-
crochet,2020.)
Crochet is a process of creating textiles by using a crochet hook to interlock loops
of yarn, thread, or strands of other materials. The name is derived from the French term
crochet, meaning 'small hook'. A method of making cloth or clothing by using a needle
with a hook at the end to form and weave loops in a thread. The term “crochet” comes
from the French word “CROCHE” means curved instrument or hook. ("Crochet". 2020.
En.Wikipedia.Org.)
The basic stitch in crocheting techniques using the hook is casting and binding.
You can have your improvised hook. First thing to do is how to make the first technique,
the Slip Knot. You can make your slip knot even without the hook. You can have your
hands in making the slip knot. Chain serves as the foundation of all crochet work, in
these we have to use the hook.
You have to begin your stitches by casting on and ends it with a closure and that
is binding off. Besides the basic instrument in Needlecraft, is necessary to ready our
Yarn Needle for closure.
In the crocheting world, closure means Bind Off and start means Cast On.
Crocheting as a technique is handcrafting a particularly durable lace from a series of
knot and loops. The Shorthand for Crochet techniques is easily understood in the
Abbreviations. Once you ready your hook, different techniques will follow. (Slip Knot,
Cast On/ Bind On and Loop Stitches. (Base, Chain, Single, Half Double, Double and
Treble)
Besides learning about crocheting, this lesson
should also develop your interest in a craft. The goals of
all the crochet enthusiasts is to complete a projects,
which are useful, attractive and beneficial. Its popular
projects include baby booties, scarves, hats, granny
squares, shawls, purses, tote bags and others. It's
possible to crochet a variety of different things, including
gowns, dresses, ponchos, and curtains.
Also, it can be used in other items like crochet edgings and a token are popular
projects; you can apply them to crocheted items and other related craft, (including
ready-made store-bought items.) For example, you could buy some socks, towels and /
or pillowcases, and add a crocheted edging to each. Not all crocheters are concerned
with completing crochet projects. There are other goals, benefits and advantages to
crochet besides just the projects. Shown herewith are sample products. All effort and
energy are worth it. Hope you enjoy working on it.

sponsored by an organization like the DMC World. Their latest innovations are
the colorful Amigurumi Crochet Characters held in Singapore. This is one way
for the enthusiasts to start making their own businesses.

2
What is It

CROCHET TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS

To make it simpler and easily understood, crochet enthusiasts rely on the
abbreviations presented. All instructions in a crochet project are usually given
using abbreviations, which you need to be able to read or interpret.
The following abbreviations and their meanings are divided into the type
of stitches and crochet instructions.

Beg Beginning Tog Together

c/ch Chain sk Skip
cl Cluster inc Increase
dc Double crochet dec Decrease
dtr Double treble crochet rnd Round
H tr Half treble bl Block
Hdc Half double crochet sp Space
Lp Loop rep Repeat
Sc Single crochet no Number
Sdc Short double crochet cont Continue
Sl st Slip stitch foll Following
St Stitch rs Right side
Sts Stiches alt Alternate
Tr Treble crochet gr Group
Tr tr Triple treble Rem Remaining
Yo Yarn over Ws Wrong side
Bs Base Stitch patt Pattern

3
Multiple of Stitches: A pattern often requires an exact number of stitches, to be
made properly. When the directions say, for example,
“multiple of 6 sts,” it means the number of stitches must be
divisible by 6, 12, 18, 24, etc. Multiple of 6 sts plus 3” would
be 15, 21, 27, etc.

Work Even: This means to continue working without increasing or

decreasing.

Repeat from: This means that all instructions following the * are to be
repeated as many times as specified in the directions.

Parentheses (): This is used in two ways; To enclose directions for larger
sizes as listed at the start of each set of directions, and to
indicate that the instructions which they enclose are to be
repeated immediately after. For ex. (tr, ch1) It means that
you should make a treble, chain 1, treble, ch1.

What’s New

Do you have an idea on what the picture presented?

Yes, as a beginner it is very important to be familiar with the
image presented. As the saying goes, you have to practice to make
everything perfect.
That’s the goal of every Crochet Enthusiasts!

2 – Half Double Crochet 3 – Double Crochet 4 – Triple Crochet

2
Almost all crochet starts with a foundation (or base) chain. This is the
equivalent of ‘casting on’ in knitting. The base chain is a series of chain
stitches, which normally begin with a loop secured by a slipknot. This image
represents the foundation chain (or base chain), the coverage of the remaining
Modules.
Our focus this time is only the four basic Crochet Stitches. We have to
begin with the simpler one from Slip Knot, Base Chain Stitch and Slip Stitch
which is the Single Crochet Stitch.

What is It

PERFORMING THE BASIC CROCHET STITCHES

SLIP KNOT
You can make your Slip Knot with your hands by forming a
Pretzel between thumb and forefinger of left hand.
To start a Crochet Project, you have to familiarize yourself on
how to use the Hook properly.

For Left-Handed Users

Bring thread towards back, under little and ring fingers, over
the middle finger, and under the forefinger toward the thumb.
Grasp hook and loop between thumb and forefinger of left
hand. Gently pull pall thread so that it lies around the fingers
firmly but not tightly. Catch knot of loop between thumb and
forefinger.

For Right-Hand Users

Take hold of broad bar of hook as you would a pencil. Bring
middle finger forward to rest near tip of hook.

3
LOOP
With the use of the Hook, insert it with your right hand. You
can make a loop by lapping long thread over short thread. Hold
loop in place between thumb and forefinger of the left hand.
Just like holding a pencil and insert it through the loop.
Catching the long end of the thread, pull it. Be sure not to
remove the hook from thread. Pull the short end ball thread in
opposite directions to bring loop close around the end of the
hook.

BASE CHAIN STITCH - is considered as the foundation or the

base of the most crochet stitches and patterns. Therefore,
chain stitch should be the first to master.
It is used to form in two ways:
• To form a chain into a ring to join around.
• To join pieces invisibly.
• It is also used to work across stitches for
shaping or strengthening edges. It does not necessary
to add height to the work.

SLIP STITCH or SINGLE CROCHET

Slip Stitch worked on chain stitch. Count to the 2nd
chainIURPWKHKRRN,QVHUWWKHKRRNIURQWWREDFNXQGHUWKH
WRS loops of the foundation chain. Yarn over the hook and
draw two loops through to complete the stitch. Pull through
both loops on your hook and have just made your first single
crochet.
To use a slip stitch to join a ring, insert your hook
under the 2 top loops of the first foundation chain and then
yarn over. Pull the hook through the chain and the loop on
the hook. You have now completed a slip stitch and made a
ring.

Direction: Make a description of the following Basic Crochet Stitches.

Write your answers on the box provided for.

ACTIVITY 2

Direction: Take a picture of a crocheted article you have at home then print
and paste it in the box. Evaluate the picture through giving comments
considering the basic crochet stitches used.

5
What I Have Learned

In this module, you have learned to perform the few basic crocheting
stitches. starting from Slip Knot to Single Crochet Stitches. You discovered how
to make a slip knot with the use of the hook or with your both hands. You may
hold the hook in either two ways, as if it is a knife or as if it were a pencil. You
may use whichever method is comfortable for you.
Always remember that in order to begin working with any crochet project,
you have to understand first the basic stitches in crocheting. Crochet is
basically an interlocking of loops. Loops of uniform tensions are produced
when hook is held correctly in one hand while the thread is kept in tension in
the other hand.

6
What I Can Do

Practice Holding the Crochet Hook and the Crochet Yarn Properly

Direction: Take a picture of yourself holding a hook or you may interpret it

in any creative you want.

7
