The Lance on Parade

This collection of Commands and ~ I n s t r u c t i o n s ,


etc., is partly intended as a guide to those who have
not l e a r n t from t h e old Imperial Instructors, and
partly to bring certain portions tb d a t e ; h u t chiefly
t o Secure uniformitv t h r o u z h o u t t h e Sauadron. a n d
f o r this purpose all.mnka are recomme;ided t o read
it carefully. T h e p a r t s relative to t h e old Exercises

Owing to few drills a n d t h e fact t h a t t h e lance
m u s t b e learnt chiefly voluntarily, i t is obvious .that
t o appear well before t h e public, o r perform good
work. attention tJ t h e drill a n d exerci8es is
necessary. Newly joined soldiers a r e urged t o lose
n o opportunity of learning these, SO t h a t t h e high
s t a n d a r d s h o x n on escort work a n d parades i n th'e
past be maintained.
Lances are used i n every large a r m y , chiefly
by regulars, owing t o 'the necessity for a thorough
training in its use. W e a r e not expected n i t h o u r
limited training to Inaster t h e lance similarly, b u t
i n Ceremonial work i t is exDected t h a t this s a u a d r o n
will uphold its old traditions; a n d Members, there-
fore, will be doing their d u t y i n training their newer
comrades.

Part A. The Lance On Parade


(1) PAHTS 01"THE LANICE.
T h e Lance consists of:-The point. t h e butt, t h e
pole, t h e point of balance, t h e sling.
T h e sling should not be allowed to come loose,
b u t be fitted or tacked so t h a t t h e bottom of it comes
two inches n e a r e r t h e b u t t than t h e point of bal-
ance.
I n fighting, t h e point and t h e b u t t a r e used for
s t r i k i n g ; t h e pole can be used for parrying a n OD-
ponent's weapon. Always remember t h e danger of
t h e point to m a n a n d horse.

off ground.

When a soldier passes a n Oflicer he w11i do so a t
t h e ShoGlder, t u r n i n g t h e head in his direction for
t h r e e paces before reaching, and thr,ee paces a f t e r
passing him.
When a Soldier addresses a n Omcer h e wiil ap-
proach a t t h e Shoulder, h a l t two paces from h i m
and Cai-rv.

When a soldier is passed by a n Omcer he will
t u r n towards him and Carry. A sentry o n t h e a - ,

(4) W ~ \ l X l N G \\'ITH; CLEAXING. ETC.
I n passing t h r o u g h doorways, or to avoid hang-
ing Ianips, etc., t h e point should always be kept vis-
ible in front of t h e soldier, and not dropped to t h e
rear, t h e usual method being t h e s h o r t t r a i l ; in
t h e open, carry it a t t h e shoulder.

Before stacking on a train or car, fold t h e pen-
non to avoid d i r t ; when suitable, s t a c k vertically,
a n d reverse t h e lance with t h e point o n floor to
prevent slipping. N.8.-The lance is often a
danger, a n d appears sq t o t h e civilian always.
Before laying aside t.he lance f a r some time,
always t a k e off t h e pennon, a n d have i t washed
and ironed, a n d packed flat; t h e point a n d b u t t
t o b e coated in vaseline or oil.
T h e best material to clean t h e steel before re-
use, and to get a polish t h a t will not easily t a k e
rust, is bath-brick brought to a fine powder by
grinding gently o n a wooden board, a n d stored i n
a box. F i r s t r u b t h e steel with a wet cloth dipped
i n t h e powder, and lastly with a d r y cloth a n d
powder. Should a n y rust, however, be o n t h e
steel, remove i t with t h e finest emery paper or
bath-brick on a n oily r a g ; n o soldier should own
a rusty lance. T h e steel burnisher as used in
regular armies, m u s t be in perfect order, or i t is
liable to scratch t h e surlace.
In camp t h e senior of each t e n t should personally
a r r a n g e t h a t every lance is oiled each night, a n
oily r a g being kept f o r t h e purpose, a n d t h a t t h e
piling i s dressed a n d safe, a card being kept for
tying tbe waist.

When s t a n d i n g dismounted to his horse at At-
tention, t h e lancer s t a n d s s q u a r e to t h e f r o n t . h i s
toes in line with t h e horse's f o r e feet, holding t h e
bridoon rein with t h e r i e h t hand near t h e- bit., a n d
t h e lance a t t h e Order I'n t h e l e f t hand.

I n field work this preparatory com-
mand will b e dispensed with.
Mount, taking c a r e t o keep t h e point

touching t h e men a n d horses in t h e
ranks. AS soon as seated i n t h e saddle,
g r a s p t h e lancc by t h e right hand below
t h e balance under t h e bridle hand,
b r i n g i t smartly over perpendicularly,
lower i t into t h e bucket, a n d Carry.
T h e endeavour should be m a d e by all
t o bring t h e lances over simultaneously.
I n ceremonial, t h e command "Eyes
Right" may follow t h a t to mount, when
a senior o n t h e r i g h t will s e t t h e time
f o r bringing over t h e lance; in doing
so a s h o r t pause will be made when t h e
lance is in f r o n t of body, butt a n d elbow
close together.
T h e lance is held upright with t h e CARRY
r i g h t hand, which grasps t h e pole, LANCIG.

Orderlies on d u t y with a Field Officer, Trail

a Stafi a s a messenger, Sling lance. Orderlies
attached will Carry a r m s when passing g u a r d s
a n d armed parties; and o n passing Officers when
detached.
Soldiers detached should sling lance, but Carry
when saluting a n Officer, though some circum-
stances m a s Permit riding to Attention with head
turned to him. Carry when passing a guard,
funeral, party under command of an Officer, o r a n y
Armed party.

Part B. Practices for Learning the
&andling of the Lance

(1) LAKClr: PRAOTICB (IMPERIAL, 1912).


T h e object of lance practice is t o , teach t h e
points, parries. butts, a n d WBVCS, and to strengthen
t h e grip and give freedom in handling t h e weapon,
a n d should b e based o n t h e principles of mounted
fighting. (See Cav. Training.)
Each series of poiuts. parries, etc., should be
carried o u t b y word of command, either by num-
bers or in drill t i m e ; t h e practice should not h e
carried o u t continuously from beginning t o end
on o n e word of command. T h e directions of a t t a c k
should h e frequently changed.
T h e men should be formed for lalice practice so
t h a t each m a n h a s a d e a r space round him of a t
least four yards, a n d before tile practice begins,
t h e instructor m u s t m a k e certain t h a t this Space
has been taken.

T h e g r e a t essentials a r e style a n d top speed;
t h e results of teaching each m a n these ementials
ensures a Safer method of holding t h e lance for a
charge, a n d t h a t control of t h e horse i s not lost
through paying all attention t o t h e weapon. ‘rent-
Pegging Is therefore useful for developing t h e
higher training of regular cavalry.
T h e horse should be s t a r t e d s t r a i g h t a n d at t h e
canter, t h e lance being aligned on t h e peg a t
a r m s length vertically. Do not allow t h e horse
to gallop a t full speed until within 4 0 yards of
t h e peg. Bend t h e body well down to t h e r i g h t
and not forward. t h e seat i n Saddle being retained
immovable; bend t h e r i g h t a r m with t h e h a n d

g’round as convenient, t h u m b along pole, back of
