K M ANTHRU

KM Anthru is the eighth son of Kottayil Moideen Sahib

and Perumbalam Kallidumkadavil Kunjomma. He was
born on April 2, 1937. In 1956, while he was a student, he
worked with his classmate Enadi Ramachandran to bring
out a Malayalam magazine “Nalathe Pookal” (Flowers of
Tomorrow). He published a series of short stories and
articles in the various media such as Kerala Bhushanam,
Kerala Kaumudi, Kerala Dhwani, Malayala Manorama, Kala
Kaumudi, Prabhatham and Bharatabhoomi. He strongly
attacked the social evils and immoralities around him
through writing.

His first story ”Pathiriyum Kozhiyirachiyum” was

published in 1957. Until 1970 he was very active in the
literary world. At that time he was writing under the name
Kanjiramattom Anthru.

His first article,”Sahitya Vazhakkukal” (Literary Fights)

was a series of reviews of secondhand rhetoric and
symbolism in literature.

This book is published by Shajil Anthru and his wife

After completing his education at Kanjiramattom Mini H S in 2004. Cover design is done by Mini H S, his
Government Lower Primary School, St. Ignatius High daughter in law who is now working as Assistant
Executive Engineer in Kerala State Electricity Board.
School and Maharaja's College, he worked at Puna This book initiated the comeback of a writer K M
Defense Account Office, the Pension Pay Master's Office Anthru who was in exile from writing for long time

at Thiruvananthapuram and then as Station Master at

the Indian Southern Railway.

But in the 1970s, his focus shifted to another area

related to the workplace and it was All India Station
Masters Association. Formed in 1953, the organization
went through its strongest fighting days in the 1970s
and '80s. KM Anthru was the Zonal President of the
Southern Railway All India Station Masters Association
at that time. He worked tirelessly for those with him and
those who worked in lower positions.
Even after his retirement, he continued to work for the
railway staff. Service Matter column titled "Doubts
Resolution" on the front page of "Rail Dhwani".

Thereafter he settled in Kochi and started handling cases of railway
employees. He proved himself as an successful advocate in high court
and central administrative tribunal.

He was very active in literature in the 1950s and 1960s. There is no need
to look for any other reason why he went back a little in that regard until
the 2000s. He was giving up his own talent and voice for his fellow
employees, downtrodden and particularly to the society through his role
as a compassionate organization leader.

Anthru, who shifted several houses during his lifetime could not
preserve his published and unpublished literary works. But with the help
of many, Anthru recollected some published stories. Eight stories were

selected from those treasures. KM Anthru's first book was published in
which included scholarly essays 2004 under the title "Pullikkuyilum, Panineerpoovum, Oru
about Vakkom Abdul khader, P K
Balakrishnan, M KrishnanNair,
Snehabandhavum"
Edappally Raghavan Pillai, P Dr. Sebastian Paul wrote the introduction. In 2003, he made a far-sighted
Bhaskaranm Khalil Gibran and
Iqbal. observation. "Anthru has built a hut next to the four blocks of the story like
the invader in the outer block ... I'm sure he cannot be let down easily..."

One wonders why KM Anthru, who has been writing stories since 1958,
did not consciously or even reach the Milky Way, the awe-inspiring Milky
Way.
When the collection "Pullikuyilum, Panineerpoovum, Oru
Snehabandhavum" was published in 2004, no one expected the return of
Anthru. He was like a newcomer who is slowly falling in love with
storytelling. From 2006 he started writing stories to the amazement of
everyone. In the early days, most of his stories and articles were
published in the Kerala Bhushanam newspaper. Malayalam literature
was later seen by KM Anthru as a flash of impossible possibilities.
In 2010 he published a collection of short stories, "The Judge and the
Camel". In 2015 he wrote "Vazhakula (not Changampuzha's)" , in 2016 he
wrote "The Banana Bunch and other stories", and in 2017 he wrote

"Padmashree". He also published a collection of scholarly essays which won two awards: Narma Kairali
named “Doorakazchakal” also during this time. Hasa Sahitya Award and Govind Rachna

In the meantime, he won the Narmakairali hasa sahitya Award in 2014
and the Govind Rachana Award of the Navarasam Sangeet Sabha in
2015. Unexpectedly in 2017 when he started publishing a collection of
essays titled "Prathibharenukkal" which would have been the most
notable in Malayalam literature, Anthru became sick and bedridden.

The book Prathibharenukal was published in 2018, proving that literature

is a medicine that can cure any disease. The articles in Prathibharenukal
are a detailed study of some of the most overlooked authors and works.
This book will be a reminder not only to the students of Malayalam
literature but to all.

Then in 2019 he became notable for his stories “Thoovalsparsham”(

Feather touch). A collection of complete works by KM Anthru is set to be
released in 2020.
K M Anthru is the founder and managing editor of Litterateur redefining

K M ANTHRU INTERNATIONAL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE 2021

... and the prize goes to Jack Foley from California

Litterateur Redefining World

Litterateur Redefining World is an online publication which started its operation in August 2020
with K M Anthru as its Managing Editor.
The inspiration behind this was K M Anthru. He was born on April 2, 1937. He started his literary
career at 17. Though publications were a few during that time, his works found space in many of
the periodicals and magazines. He started publishing books, mainly Malayalam Short stories and
literary essays, from 2000. Since then, he published about eight books. During his long career in
literature, he published a countless number of works in various print magazines. While he was
very active in literature during his old age, he suddenly became sick and bedridden in 2017. He
had an unfulfilled dream of becoming an editor of a magazine. The thought of Litterateur
Redefining World arose to fulfil this dream. Sad to add, he passed away on 19 December 2020. He
was the man who loved literature, lived through it and died for it.

But the magazine he started acclaimed a notable position in the World literature in a brief span. In
memoriam and, as a mark of the respect towards him, we instituted K M Anthru International
Literature Prize. It is a humble beginning from Litterateur Redefining World to acknowledge and
honor the great masters of literature and Arts who dedicated their life to literature and contributed
comprehensively throughout.

A warm welcome from me and STUDY WORLD Education Holding.
I am extremely happy and honored to become the part of Global
Literature Conclave, an initiative of Litterateur Redefining World, a
transnational magazine from Kerala, India. Also, I am happy to
become the first Jury Chairperson for the K M Anthru Prize for
Literature.
K M Anthru, renowned writer from Kerala, who wrote in mother
tongue, led a very simple life and showed his literary skills
throughout his career in diverse ways. He used to love the
alphabets, words and language, no matter whether as a litterateur or
a railway employee or an advocate.
His life was gentle, and the elements so mixed in him that nature
might stand up and say to all the world,
“This was a man!”
Such was his life, which is truly dedicated to literature.
And his magazine Litterateur Redefining World, within a brief span
of time, had spread all over the globe, which shows how K M Anthru
inculcated his vision to his next generation.
The response to the nomination call for K M Anthru Prize was
exciting, and we got ample numbers of nominations which made
Jury tough.

The key factors which we considered during the evaluation were the
years of literary activities, presence in both print and online media,
number of literary genres, other artistic activities and their
contribution to literature with studies and novel ideas or
experiments.
All the jury members unanimously selected, “Mr. Jack Foley” from
California as the topper in the evaluation and I heartily announce the
first and 2021 K M ANTHRU INTERNATIONAL PRIZE FOR
LITERATURE goes to Jack Foley from California.

I would like to add why we considered Jack Foley

as the winner.
Jack Foley was born in August 1940 in Neptune,
New Jersey. As an excellent student, and with
the aid of his local library, Foley read widely and
soon exploring the works of various poets. At
fifteen he realized that, whatever else he was, he
was now and forever a poet.

Foley’s parents could not afford to send him to college, but he

surprised them by winning scholarship money that enabled him to
attend first Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and then The
University of California at Berkeley.

Foley worked hard as a graduate student at Berkeley and tried to

keep his poetry going amid all the furor of “the sixties.” Eventually he
dropped out of school. He wanted to become a poet. Foley also
developed various techniques for writing and presenting poetry.

He persuaded his wife Adelle to help him perform what he called

“choruses”--a word that conjured up both the ancient Greeks and the
world of musical comedy.
Litterateur

Dr.Vidhya Vinod, India

Foley created a “tap dance” poem which featured not only his words
but a bit of the art his father taught him. Over the years, Foley
published a multitude of books with various publishers—books of
poetry, but books of essays as well.

Foley continues to write, perform, and think about poetry.

1955 to 2021 is a long journey in which Jack Foley had chosen

poetry and writing for his “breathing”. His presence in print and
online media is really commendable. He writes poetry, prose,
essays, stories, dramas and had his signature in all genres of
literature. Performance of Choruses and tap dance poems are
innovative in the literature world.

We thankfully acknowledge the nomination of Jack Foley and

heartily congratulate him for this achievement and wish him all
health and energy to contribute more to literature.

The organizers had chosen anniversary function of Litterateur

Redefining World to hold the Global Literature Conclave as well. In
coming days, there will be more poetry, fiction, paintings and literary
discussions and speeches which will enrich the celebration. This is
a good, innovative initiative and wish all success for this team and
magazine in the future. I am glad to declare this Global Literature
Conclave 2021 conducted by Litterateur Redefining World as
inaugurated.

...Thank you
