we mean. This will help in avoiding conflicts and solve problems. It will help in
establishing healthy relationships with others as well .) - ESP
2. What are the types of communicative style and which situations are they used?
1. Casual
This is an informal language used by friends and peers.
Slang, vulgarities and colloquialism, informal contractions (e.g., ain’t, dunno,
gonna) are normal in this type of speech style.
This uses “group language,” so only members of the group can understand it.
Here, nicknames are used in addressing one another.
a. Everyday conversation with buddies or friend
b. A personal message and personal emails
2. Consultative
This is used in semi-formal communication, where sentences tend to be shorter
and spontaneous.
It happens in two-way participation.
It uses unplanned speech. This is the normal style for speaking to strangers or
persons who are neither acquaintances nor friends nor relatives.
a. Regular classroom discussions
b. Doctor-patient
c. Lawyer-client
3. Formal
It is straightforward speeches.
It is used in speaking to large groups and is impersonal in nature.
Speaker must frame whole sentences ahead before they are delivered.
It avoids using slang terminologies and uses formal English.
Language is comparatively rigid and has a set, agreed-upon vocabulary
structured complex sentences and noun phrases.
a. Meetings
b. SONA (State of the Nation Address)
(What does SONA stand for? Who delivers the SONA? Who is our current president?
What is his complete name?) – Araling Panlipunan
4. Frozen
This type of communicative style rarely or never changes.
It is “frozen” in time and content.
It is generally used in a very formal setting.
This is the most formal communicative style for a respectful situation.
It has a fixed and static language and uses long sentences with a good
command of grammar.
(Let us take water which takes any form of its container as an example. If we put water
in very low temperature, what will happen? When it is frozen and in the form of an ice,
the particles are steady, fixed and immovable.) – Science
a. National Anthem
b. Holy Mass
5. Intimate
This type of communicative style applies to conversational experiences between
and/or among people who share intimate relationships.
Usually done in private, this also shows no social boundaries among the speakers
considering their intimacy.
This also employs informal and intimate language.
a. Sharing of secrets between friends
b. Parents talking about their family goals
